Behind the scenes[]

Although US/Imperial measurements, such as the foot and the inch, have been used in some Star Wars material,[14] Star Wars mainly uses the metric system. Editor Tom Hoeler even once decided against using the word "inching" while promoting the novel The Living Force on Twitter because of the franchise's preference, which he admitted could be "a ridiculous line of thought" for what was a simple social media post.[31] Hoeler also stated that editors would flag uses of the Imperial system to be replaced by the metric.[32] By Hoeler's own admission, however, Star Wars creatives have never managed to create a metric version of "inching closer,"[33] with author John Jackson Miller even making a joke about how the phrase "centimetering ever closer" had never appeared as an alternative.[34]

So you can't use an idiom like "inching" to describe movement. Is that a ridiculous line of thought for a tweet? Yes. But the standard is the standard." (backup link)
  32. TwitterLogo Tom Hoeler (@DarthInternous) on Twitter: "Possible, but unlikely. Not only would that be flagged for imperial/metric, but we're also careful about language being too colloquial. That would be something I'd flag for discussion. But I wouldn't be surprised if it got used in a very old book. (In response to: "Hmm, now I'm wondering if the phrase "6 foot under" has ever been used in a SW book")" (backup link)
  33. TwitterLogo Tom Hoeler (@DarthInternous) on Twitter: "Yeah we've never found one. Good replacement is "crept closer" "slid forward" "moved closer" etc. (In response to: "I'm trying to find a metric version "inching closer" but I don't think "millimetering closer" is it 😂")" (backup link)
  34. TwitterLogo John Jackson Miller (@jjmfaraway) on Twitter: "Curiously, the expression "centimetering ever closer" never quite caught on in their galaxy! (In response to: "I almost wrote "inching ever closer" but then my editor brain said "Star Wars uses the metric system, inches don't exist.
