- "We infiltrated a smuggler ring on Karazak. They had no idea what they were dealing with."
- ―Lene Kostana
Karazak was a world in the Outer Rim known for its enslavement industry. Around 82 BBY, Jedi Master Lene Kostana and her Padawan, Sifo-Dyas, infiltrated a smuggler ring on Karazak while investigating Sith relics on the black market. The smuggler ring's supply routes lured them and Padawan Dooku into a trap set up by the Presagers of Hakotei on the planet Asusto. In 4 ABY, the Lormar-class space station Whitedrift Exchange arrived in orbit around Karazak.
Description[]
A terrestrial[3] world,[4] Karazak was situated in the Outer Rim Territories[1] and Trailing Sectors[2] regions. The world was located in grid square P-19 of the Standard Galactic Grid.[1]
History[]
Around 82 BBY,[5] Jedi Master Lene Kostana and her Padawan, Sifo-Dyas, infiltrated a smuggler ring on Karazak while attempting to track down and confiscate black market relics of the Sith. The smuggler ring did not realize what they were dealing with, and Kostana and Sifo-Dyas were able to follow their supply routes. The pair, accompanied by the Padawan Dooku, were led to the planet Asusto, where they learned that the trail was a trap orchestrated by the last remaining coven of the Presagers of Hakotei. Dooku later documented the events in his journal.[3] Around 23 BBY,[6] Dooku allowed his recently recruited Sith assassin, Asajj Ventress, to find his journal during her investigation into his sister Jenza's location, and she listened to the portion that mentioned Karazak.[3]
By the Imperial Era, Karazak was an enslaver world.[4] It shared its name with the Karazak Slavers' Cooperative, an enslavement organization active during that time.[7] In 4 ABY,[8] the Lormar-class space station Whitedrift Exchange, a mobile trading post and residential station, entered into orbit around Karazak, and an announcement of the arrival was broadcast on board. The former 204th Imperial Fighter Wing major Soran Keize, living on the Whitedrift Exchange as "Devon Lhent," thought that their arrival at Karazak would have once triggered scrutiny from the Galactic Empire—which, despite tolerating enslavement, had regulated it—but did not expect the New Republic to do the same.[4]
Behind the scenes[]
In the current Star Wars canon, Karazak was first depicted on a map in the article Where in the Galaxy Are the Worlds of Star Wars: The Force Awakens?, written by Mark Newbold and published on StarWars.com on January 29, 2016. The name "Karazak" was not fully visible on the image used in the article,[9] but the world was later identified in Star Wars: The Force Awakens Beginner Game, a Star Wars Roleplaying boxed set released by Fantasy Flight Games[1] on August 4 of that year.[10]
In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the name of the planet[11] Karazak was originally introduced in Galaxy Guide 9: Fragments from the Rim, a 1993 sourcebook written by Simon Smith and Eric Trautmann and published by West End Games for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.[12] Karazak was subsequently described as a distinct celestial body in Rick D. Stuart's 1994 sourcebook Galaxy Guide 10: Bounty Hunters.[13]
