A male individual fathered a Kaleesh son named Qymaen jai Sheelal. He trained his son to fire a slugthrower and recognized his potential as a marksman and his high intelligence. The male died in battle, after which Sheelal inherited his mumuu mask. Sheelal later changed his name to Grievous and became a cyborg after a shuttle crash by 29 BBY, carving a mask for himself that resembled his father's death mask.

Biography[]

Grievoushead-OP

Grievous carved a mask to resemble his father's death mask.

The Kaleesh Qymaen jai Sheelal was raised during the brutal period of the Huk War, where the Yam'rii species—derogatorily called the Huk—invaded Sheelal's homeworld Kalee. Sheelal's father encouraged his son's anger against the Yam'rii by teaching him to fire a slug-rifle with great precision. He discovered his son's intellect and marksmanship in the process, and the young Kaleesh had already killed forty Yam'rii by the time he turned eight years old, his military prowess growing to a point where his own people considered him a demigod.[2]

By 29 BBY,[1] Sheelal's father died in battle, and the son inherited a mumuu mask from him. Sheelal met a Kaleesh warrior named Ronderu lij Kummar, who fought by Sheelal's side and was rumored to have been his half-sister. Her death in battle drove Sheelal to bury his grief by taking the name Grievous while also expanding his family by taking ten wives and fathering thirty children, making his own father a grandfather.[2] Around 24 BBY,[1] Grievous survived a shuttle crash that required him to become a cyborg to survive. Grievous was initially unsatisfied with his new soulless cybernetic face, so he carved an armorplast mask that resembled his father's death mask and had it grafted onto his alloy skull.[2]

Personality and traits[]

Grievous's father encouraged his son's anger against the Yam'rii by teaching him to fire a rifle and observed his intellectual and marksmanship abilities.[2]

Equipment[]

Grievous's father had a mask[2] carved from the skull of a mumuu, a creature on whom Kaleesh warriors would prove their worth by hunting.[3] Grievous inherited and wore the mask after his father died. The father also had a death mask.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Grievous's father was first mentioned in "Unknown Soldier: The Story of General Grievous," an article written by Abel G. Peña and published in the eighty-sixth issue of Star Wars Insider,[2] published on February 13, 2006.[4]

Notes and references[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 "Unknown Soldier: The Story of General Grievous" places the death of Grievous's father prior to his shuttle crash and cyborg reconstruction. Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader states that the reconstruction had taken place a decade prior, and The Essential Reader's Companion places the novel in 19 BBY. Therefore, Grievous's father must have died by 29 BBY.
