- "Melshi. Gone too soon, but it's good to see the old nek's name once more. I served with him on Gaulus."
- ―Caluan Ematt, in an annotation of The Rebel Files
Gaulus was a planet where Rebel Alliance forces, including Lieutenant Caluan Ematt and Sergeant Ruescott Melshi, were active at one point. When the Alliance subsequently retreated from Gaulus, the rebel UT-60D U-wing starfighter/support craft were used as medical evacuation lifters.
Description[]
Gaulus was a terrestrial planet[1] that shared its name with the Gaulus sector of the Outer Rim Territories.[3]
History[]
By 1 BBY,[4] the Rebel Alliance had been active on Gaulus. Sergeant Ruescott Melshi and Lieutenant Caluan Ematt served together there,[2] becoming friends thereafter.[1] The Alliance eventually had to retreat from Gaulus, with UT-60D U-wing starfighter/support craft used as medical evacuation lifters during the withdrawal.[2]
The U-wing's use on Gaulus was noted in a report made by rebel General Antoc Merrick for the Alliance's Commander-in-Chief Mon Mothma, in which the former proposed the wider use of the support crafts as multi-role starships. Merrick's report was eventually collected by archivist Hendri Underholt, who included it in the compilation of non-electronic documents known as The Rebel Files. When The Rebel Files later fell into the hands of the Resistance[2]—a military group with roots in the Alliance[5]—in 34 ABY,[6] Resistance officers, including Major Ematt, annotated the documents inside. Ematt saw a report from his old comrade Melshi within and recalled in an annotation that they had served together on Gaulus.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
In the current Star Wars canon, Gaulus was first introduced by mention in the 2017 reference book Star Wars: The Rebel Files, written by Daniel Wallace.[2] The planet Gaulus originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first mentioned in the West End Games Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game supplement The Rebel Alliance Sourcebook, written by Paul Murphy and released in 1990. Artist Allen Nunis depicted Gaulus in the book.[7]
