The family of the half-Theelin pilot Friielan was present on[1] the Outer Rim planet[2] Valo[1] during the world's Republic Fair in 231 BBY. When Nihil marauders attacked the fair, the strike resulted in the deaths of numerous Jedi and civilians,[3] including Friielan's immediate family members. Following their relatives' passing, the pilot adopted a sharply focused demeanor, though still maintained a companionable attitude.[1]

By 228 BBY,[4] Friielan—as part of the Republic Defense Coalition—began working with Jedi Master Avar Kriss on dangerous missions across the Nihil's Stormwall hyperspace barrier, which took the pair into the marauders' Occlusion Zone to rescue individuals and bring them back to Republic space.[1] That year,[4] Kriss reflected on how the loss of their family had resulted in Friielan's change in countenance.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The family first appeared in the form of Friielan in the 2024 novel Temptation of the Force, written by Tessa Gratton and published as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase III.[5]

The implementation of the Guardian Protocols, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia places in 229 BBY, took place one week after Starlight Beacon's fall according to The High Republic: Shadows of Starlight 1. As The High Republic: Temptation of the Force takes place one year and six weeks after the destruction of Starlight Beacon and its events span a few months, its events must be set in 228 BBY.
