Hi,
[Insert spiel about how straight-to-CT issues are unusual and suboptimal, but that in this case, it's pass/fail and minor]. Right, so proposing a small change to Forum:Senate Hall. Some history on that page is that the last time it's been meaningfully altered is around 2013 usually procedural stuff. This CT is to codify something that I've personally seen done for awhile by admins, and was recently brought up on the noticeboard. It's been next on my CT list to put up, and now that a few others of mine have passed, seems time.
To add a line after "All non-pinned threads will be archived by an administrator or a bot after thirty days of inactivity." that says:
- Administrators may also archive a thread if either the resulting Consensus track for the thread is closed as either support or oppose via the consensus policy, or if the Senate Hall's original author requests for the thread to be closed after part one of a discussion has completed its Consensus track, with the intention to continue the discussion on a fresh Senate Hall in short order.
This does not mean that Senate Halls will always or automatically be closed under these standards. It does allow, however, for the SH to not remain clogged with threads that have had their votes closed as either pass or fail already, and in many cases there's not more to discuss (a lot of them kinda just snowball/holdo nowadays). It also doesn't state anything about "no consensus" votes—only ones that the community has definitely had consensus on, in which the two-year rule for it sticking in place unless there's more voters than the last time applies. And then finally, at least from what I've seen, it's been practice to allow for a fresh Senate Hall at the request or agreement of the original SH author. This won't result in forums being closed under one month most of the time, but, when it does happen it can make sure that all comments for the second or third part of a discussion make it to one spot instead of being split across two forums and causing confusion with really long forums. Also, new forums get announced to the Discord again and usually receive much more traffic, which is a reason people choose to split SHs sometimes.
But either way, I definitely agree with specifying the exact parameters of this even if it's common practice. Mainly because, by clearly specifying that the CT must have passed prior in order to manually close a thread early, it means that administrators can't abuse and close a discussion earlier if it hasn't idled out yet to prevent a discussion they don't like from happening. And then, of course, the rest of the process remains unchanged—if a forum simply idles out and is never taken to CT, or if it just idles out for any other reason, it'll be either automatically bot-done or happily done by a paperwork-loving admin after 30 days.—spookywillowwtalk 21:06, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

- Thought this was the idea we discussed on the side about closing Senate Halls made by Fan26s early, but this seems like a good thing too. NBDani (they/them)Yeager's Repairs 22:38, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- Either way this wouldn't affect me since my new policy proposal "Dani Can No Longer Vote" is probably reasonable enough that I can just take it directly to CT without much protest Fan26 (Talk) 23:53, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
