The result of the debate was Adopt proposal. Imperators II(Talk) 14:31, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
Based on the positive feedback on this Senate Hall thread, I believe it's time to move this onto the Consensus track. I propose we update the "What is not a reliable resource?" section of our Canon policy to the following (proposed addition bolded):
- "Social media posts from Lucasfilm Story Group members or Star Wars authors are not valid independent sources of in-universe information. The only social media posts allowed as independent sources of in-universe information are from official Star Wars brand accounts, such as the official Star Wars Twitter and Facebook page. An additional permitted exception is Jason Fry's Jedi Council Forums comment on the "Planetnamia" reasoning, as presented in {{Planetnamia}}, which is assumed to also apply to the galactic map created for the book Star Wars: Timelines. Posts from Story Group members and authors may be used in out-of-universe pages and page sections as needed, such as to document authorial intent or background development."
Additionally, I propose we introduce a new parameter, |canon=
, to the Planetnamia template, which would add a mention of Timelines to the template's text for Canon subjects. So, for example,
{{Planetnamia|species=[[Benathy]]|homeworld=Benath|canon=1}}
- would result in
The Essential Atlas and Galactic Cartography: Official Discussion on the Jedi Council Forums (Literature board; posted by jasonfry on December 11, 2007, 7:59am; accessed March 6, 2016): "I wouldn't get your hopes up re alien homeworlds, beyond simple stuff like the Planetnamian species getting a Planetnamia on the map or things Dan and I can account for with a relatively quick reference." (backup link) Jason Fry, co-author of The Essential Atlas and Star Wars: Timelines, stated his intention to create homeworlds for numerous species based on context implied from their names. This article treats Benathy as one such homeworld with regard to the Benathy species.
Note that the proposals above only concern the map from Star Wars: Timelines, since it's the only canon one which we know had Fry's involvement.
P.S. This is your friendly neighborhood Imperators, reminding that Planetnamia's use on canon articles should mirror that on Legends ones, which use the template for Planetnamian entities that can fairly be assumed to have actually originated/taken place in the given star system—material entities such as locations, food, beverages, diseases, types of organisms (both sentient and non-sentient ones), weapons, and others, and non-material entities such as languages, social groups, and movements and movement systems. Conversely, Planetnamia isn't used for subjects where it is better for such an assumption to not be made, such as namesake astrographical objects, events, and proper names of vehicles.
