"My old friends on Jedha once told me that kyber crystals were the only power source for a lightsaber's blade, but Etai's citizens insist that their own etaan crystals are a perfectly suitable substitute."
―Strono Tuggs, The Ultimate Cookbook[2]

Etaan crystals were a rare and unusual form of kyber crystal from the deep caverns of the planet Etai. Raw etaan crystals echoed sound with a humming resonance and this property was retained when they were used to build lightsabers, creating a blade that thrummed in harmony with motion. The chef Strono Tuggs was inspired to create the Spiced Jybbuk Juice beverage by the idea of using etaan crystals in lightsabers.

Description[]

Etaan crystals were an unusual type of kyber crystal that, in their raw form, echoed nearly any sound with a humming resonance. They formed in the deep caverns of the Mid Rim planet Etai, rarely appearing at less than five hundred meters below surface level and usually found at twice those depths.[1]

History[]

Lightsaber crystals[]

Etaan crystals could be used during lightsaber construction.

Due to the depth at which they formed, etaan crystals were extremely difficult to locate, although searchers could use the crystals' echoing quality to guide them to the formations. Once harvested, the crystals could be used in place of a normal kyber crystal during the construction of a lightsaber. Crystals used in such a way retained their resonant properties and created a lightsaber blade that chimed in response to nearby sounds and thrummed in harmony with motion.[1]

When coming into contact with another lightsaber blade or a blaster bolt, blades generated by an etaan crystal created an especially spectacular response, producing a near-deafening cracking sound and a bright energy flare. This pushed apart lightsaber blades meeting in this fashion, but blaster bolts reflected by an etaan crystal blade would draw in some of its resonant energies and intensify while on their new trajectory.[1]

Recipe inspiration[]

"Maybe it's true, maybe not. (Doesn't really matter, since there ain't any Jedi left anyhow.) But it got me thinkin' about what I could exchange in a recipe and still make it work."
―Strono Tuggs, The Ultimate Cookbook[2]

Strono Tuggs was inspired by etaan crystals to make Spiced Jybbuk Juice.

During the Galactic Civil War, etaan crystals were rare to find and cost twelve thousand credits to purchase.[1] The Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs was informed by the people of Etai that etaan crystals could be used in place of regular kyber crystals in a lightsaber, although he did not know[2] that etaan crystals were themselves a type of kyber.[1]

The Artiodac was uncertain if the claim was accurate or not and believed it mattered little as there were no Jedi left to use lightsabers, but he was prompted to think about similar exchanges he could make in his cooking recipes. The idea inspired him to swap the traditional fruit garnish that the people of Etai used on jybbuk slush topped with condensed nerf milk for candied hot peppers, creating the beverage known as Spiced Jybbuk Juice.[2]

In 35 ABY,[3] Tuggs included the recipe for Spiced Jybbuk Juice in his third cookbook, The Ultimate Cookbook, following a culinary tour of the galaxy that he took[2] between 34 ABY and 35 ABY.[3] He mentioned the crystals in the book but admitted he was still uncertain about their use in lightsabers.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Etaan crystals were first mentioned in Endless Vigil, a 2016 Star Wars Roleplaying supplement written by Tim Huckelberry and James M. Spahn for the Star Wars: Force and Destiny tabletop roleplaying game published by Fantasy Flight Games.[1]

  3. 3.0 3.1 Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook establishes that the publishing of the in-universe The Ultimate Cookbook and the culinary tour that preceded it occurred following the publishing of The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook and prior to the destruction of Kijimi. It also establishes that The Ultimate Cookbook was published following the Festival of the Ancestors that occurred during that time period. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook further establishes that The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook was published concurrently with the First Order's search for the Resistance base on Batuu, which Star Wars: Timelines dates to 34 ABY. In addition, Timelines dates the Festival of the Ancestors and the destruction of Kijimi to 35 ABY, meaning the tour must have taken place between 34 ABY and 35 ABY and The Ultimate Cookbook must have been published in 35 ABY.
