"Steelpeckers search for vanadium, osmiridium, and corundum which they store in their gizzards so you want to stay away from parts with concentrations of those—such as gyroscopic equipment or focusing arrays that have been exposed to intense heat."
―Rey in her survival guide of Jakku[5]

Corundum was a pink metal that was used to construct Jedi lightsabers and gyroscopes. It was consumed by steelpeckers on the planet Jakku and kept in their gizzards to aid with digestion.

Description[]

Corundum was a pink colored[1] metal[3] could be used to contruct the emitters and switches of Jedi lightsabers.[1] It was also found in gyroscopic equipment and focusing arrays that had been exposed to intense heat.[5] The metal, found on the planet Jakku, was consumed by steelpeckers and collected in their gizzards[2] to aid with digestion.[4] When combined in their gizzards with the materials vanadium and osmiridium, corundum formed a chemical that helped break down a steelpecker's metal food.[6]

History[]

This section of the article assumes 100% game completion. Any alternate stories may be noted in the "Behind the scenes" section. The events in this section may or may not have been confirmed as canon.

In 14 BBY,[7] the Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis discovered some corundum on the planet Bogano and kept it for making modifications to his former master's lightsaber.[1]

Many years later during the New Republic Era, the Jakkuvian scavenger Rey wrote about the steelpecker birds' affinity for the metal in her survival guide and warned future scavengers of Jakku's Starship Graveyard to avoid parts that contained high concentrations of it so they would not encounter them.[5]

Behind the scenes[]

Corundum was first mentioned in the reference book Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary by Pablo Hidalgo[2] and the replica journal Rey's Survival Guide by Jason Fry,[5] both released on December 18, 2015 in conjunction with the film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.[8] It first appeared in the 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order developed by Respawn Entertainment, where it was one of twenty-four materials players could collect to customize the appearance of Cal Kestis' lightsaber.[1]
