"Where is Viess?"
"The Precipitate Fire lost Naboo to a second Republic attack. The general has yet to reach out, but her second insists that Viess escaped."
―Marchion Ro and Thaya Ferr[1]

An individual lived during the High Republic Era.[1] Between 229 BBY and 228 BBY,[2] they came to serve as second to General[1] Abediah Viess[3] in the Nihil pirates' Ministry of Protection, which Viess led.[1] In 228 BBY,[2] the general lost control of the Nihil-occupied[1] Mid Rim[4] planet Naboo after it was liberated by the Jedi Order and Republic Defense Coalition.[1]

Afterward, Viess' second insisted that despite the loss, the general had escaped Naboo, which came to the attention of Thaya Ferr—the secretary of Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro. When Ferr later reported to Ro about the Nihil space station Lightning Crash being attacked by the Republic and Jedi, the Eye asked her for Viess' location. In response, the secretary told Ro of the general's defeat at Naboo, noting that she had yet to reach out, before adding the second's urging that Viess had escaped. The second was correct as the general had in fact escaped the planet.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Abediah Viess' second was mentioned in the 2024 novel The High Republic: Temptation of the Force, written by Tessa Gratton and published as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase III.[5]

  2. 2.0 2.1 Star Wars: Timelines dates Starlight Beacon's destruction to 230 BBY. The implementation of the Guardian Protocols, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia places in 229 BBY, took place one week after Starlight Beacon's fall according to The High Republic: Shadows of Starlight 1. As The High Republic: Temptation of the Force takes place one year and six weeks after the destruction of Starlight Beacon and its events span a few months, its events must be set in 228 BBY. The High Republic: Shadows of Starlight 4 establishes that Abediah Viess joined the Nihil four months after Starlight Beacon's fall, meaning she must have joined the Nihil in 229 BBY. As the individual served as second to Viess in the Nihil Ministry of Protection during Temptation of the Force, they must have come to that position between 229 BBY and 228 BBY.
