Gene Poe (born 7 January 1947; age 77) is an actor who appeared as an Enterprise sciences crewmember in the recreation deck scene in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. He received no credit for this appearance.
Poe was born in Lynchburg and raised in Alatavista, Virginia. He attended William Campbell High School and graduated from Altavista High School. He earned his BS in Directing and Acting from Virginia Commonwealth University and studied at the Guildhall in London, UK, besides touring through Europe.During this time, Poe appeared as a background actor, an American hippie alongside Dennis Christopher, in his first film, Federico Fellini's Roma (1972).
Following his move back to the US, Poe settled down in Los Angeles, California in 1972. He has started to work as actor and stand-in and worked on print ads, magazine shoots, as hand double, and frequent background actor on television series and films. Among his acting appearances are Fantasm (1976, with Clement von Franckenstein), Two-Minute Warning (1976, with Brock Peters, Allan Miller, Mitchell Ryan, Garry Walberg, Freddie Hice, Tom Huff, Glenn R. Wilder, Gary Combs, David Armstrong, Peter Eastman, Bob Harks, and Branscombe Richmond), the short film Killers Matinee (1978), and Raging Bull (1980, with Gene LeBell, Shay Duffin, Nick Trisko, Bob Harks, Chuck Hicks, David LeBell, Gil Perkins, and McKenzie Westmore).
Poe worked on various television series as background actor including The Love Boat, M*A*S*H*, Baa Baa Black Sheep, four episodes of Cheers (1982, with Buzz Barbee, Gerald David Bauman, David Channell, Dwayne McGee, Ron Cragg, and Ian Wolfe and 1983 with Walter Smith), Dynasty (1982, 1986, and 1988 along with Lee Bergere, Joan Collins, Suzanne Lodge, Roger Trantham, John Copage, Joel Marston, Robert Pine, Clayton Landey, Tim McCormack, Kimberly L. Poe was president of the Screen Extras Guild for five years and worked on the Board of Directors for thirteen years. He was also on the Screen Actors Guild Board of Directors for twelve years and served on the Board of Trustees of the SAG Health & Pension Plan.
In the more recent years, Poe appeared as Justice of the Peace on the drama The Vampire's Dance (2008) and worked as stand-in for Anthony Hopkins on Thor (2011, with Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba, Joseph Gatt, Jamie McShane, Jim Palmer, J. Michael Straczynski, Stan Lee, Rob Mars, Troy Brenna, Derek Graf, and Douglas Tait).
In 2013, Poe retired from acting and has since worked as a multimedia artist with creating digital paintings.
