Died on December 28, 2017 at age 97
Ms. Taylor was 24 she was abducted and raped by six white men in Alabama in 1944. The men never went to trial for their crime, which became a catalyst for the civil rights movement and decades later inspired a book and a documentary. The Alabama Legislature officially apologized to Ms. Taylor in 2011, calling the failure to prosecute her attackers “morally abhorrent and repugnant.”
