#DidYouKnow that Goodwill of Greater Washington is working to keep donated items out of landfills by using a glass pulverizer to recycle discarded glass into sand?! We’ll take damaged glass items that cannot be sold and put them through our new machine named Penny. Penny is projected to keep more than 500,000 pounds of glass out of local landfills each year. That recycled material can then be reused in construction, landscaping, or other projects that require sand or gravel. Next Friday, July 12th at the Music Center at Strathmore Hall, the second Goodwill Excel Center DC graduating class of 2024 will celebrate the successful completion of their high school studies! 🎉 We anticipate approximately 70 graduates to accept their high school diplomas. This will be the thirteenth graduating class for the Goodwill Excel Center in Washington, DC and the second to include graduates from both our NW and SW campuses. "Like many of you, I have a problem. I drive around with Goodwill donations sitting in my trunk for weeks and months. Sometimes I forget that they're there. Other times, I honestly don't feel like stopping to do a drop-off when visiting Goodwill: I have an irrational fear that another vintage-loving thrifter will snag the finds I want if I don't run into the store immediately upon arrival. Big news! Last week, the Virginia Housing Board approved the award of highly competitive 9% Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) to our upcoming apartment community in partnership with Goodwill of Greater Washington. The $1,950,000 annual tax credits will allow approximately $17.5 million in LIHTC equity to be invested in the project to fund the new construction of 63 apartment homes. These homes are part of a larger development that includes 128 total apartments, a childcare center, and a brand-new Goodwill retail and donation center. Next up, we'll submit our application for non-competitive 4% tax credits to help fund the rest of the homes!
