"The Xouri family. 'To survive.' "
―Marda Ro, in her journal[1]

The Xouri family was an Evereni family originating from the species' homeworld Everon whose name came from a word in their language that meant "to survive." In 500 BBY, the family was instrumental in leading their people away from death after they were nearly wiped out by a natural distaster and centuries of war. The Xouri family went on to be remembered for a long time, and records of them were included on a list of Evereni names kept by a member of the species' Faer family. At some point no earlier than 379 BBY, the member's grandchildren, the siblings Vika and Velya Faer, told the Evereni pirate leader Marda Ro about the Xouri family after Ro asked them to tell her more about the species. Ro later mentioned the Xouri family in a message she recorded for her descendants, which her great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to by 252 BBY.

Description[]

The Xouri family was an Evereni family that came from Everon, the species' homeworld. They received their name from the Evereni word meaning "to survive," as the species named its families for actions.[1]

History[]

"Their grandmother has a list of Evereni names that goes all the way back to the storm planet, and the record of the family who led us away from death."
―Marda Ro in her journal, regarding the grandmother of Vika and Velya Faer[1]

The Xouri family helped the last few Evereni depart their homeworld.

After a natural distaster destabilized the Evereni society, the species was nearly driven to extinction by centuries of conflict.[3] In 500 BBY,[2] the few surviving Evereni—known as The Wanderers—left their homeworld and flew to the stars[3] to escape death, an endeavor in which the Xouri family played an essential role.[1]

A member of the Faer family, the grandmother of the siblings Vika and Velya Faer, kept a list of Evereni names dating back to when the species lived on Everon, which included records of the Xouri family.[1] At some point no earlier than 379 BBY,[4] the Faer siblings met the Evereni Marda Ro,[1] the founder of the marauder group who would eventually become the Nihil.[5] Ro, being curious about[1] her[6] species, asked the two to tell her more. Among other things, the Faers told her about the Xouri family and the role they played in saving the Evereni. Ro later mentioned the Xouri family in a recording she made for her descendants.[1] By 252 BBY,[7] during his youth, Ro's great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to her journal, including the entry where the Xouri family was mentioned.[6]

Behind the scenes[]

The Xouri family was mentioned in the short story "A Closed Fist Has No Claws," written by Tessa Gratton and published in the 2023 young-adult anthology The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project. The Evereni naming convention, which was used for the Xouri family,[1] was created by Gratton. In an interview,[5] they[8] revealed that they wanted to give Evereni a naming convention as he was frustrated by the absence of naming conventions in Star Wars. She also revealed the naming convention was one of the first parts of the story they created.[5]

  4. The segment of "A Closed Fist Has No Claws" depicting a Jedi's death onboard the Gaze Electric takes place around 379 BBY per the reasoning here. Marda Ro met the Faers after the Jedi's death; therefore, she must have met them no earlier than 379 BBY.
