What is this all about?[]

Image galleries are Evil™. Certain legal-minded people within Wookieepedia have been trying to destroy them since they started popping up, and the latest Mofference finally came to a consensus on how to do just that.

We will replace them. With something that's effectively self-cleaning and self-maintaining.

No longer will we have images that exist only in a gallery. No longer will we have pages that exist only to serve as a deliberately-constructed copyright violation.

We will categorize them.

Every file on Wookieepedia. All 127,908 of them.

Yes. We're serious. It can and will be done. Look at Memory Alpha. The kriffing Star Trek wiki has done it. Why can't we? Our universe is better than theirs. In every other way, our wiki is better than theirs. How can we let them have a cleaner and neater method of sorting images than us?

HOW DO WE FIX THIS!?!?[]

It's easy. Edit the image description page and add a category to the box. Or two. Or seventeen. However many the image fits into.

Category structure development[]

We're going to kick this project off by sorting by source. That's easy, for images that have a source.

The source tree will go like this:

• Lucasfilm
  • Licensee (WEG, Decipher, etc.)
    • Product family (RPG, CCG, etc.)
      • Source name

Then we source by subject.

• Top level image type (images of people, images of devices, images of ships, etc.)
  • More specific (images of Jedi, images of weapons, images of fighters, etc.)
    • Extra specific (Luke Skywalker images, Lightsaber images, X-wing images, etc.)

Then we source by type.

• Live action subjects
• CGI subjects
  • Photorealistic CGI
  • Artistic CGI
• Artistic subjects
  • Technical drawings
  • Comic art
  • Other art

Category label application[]

Please be sure not to redundantly categorize things. Something in Category:Images of MK-09 maintenance droids doesn't need to be labeled with Category:Images of droids as well, since the former is a subcategory of the latter.

Individuals should be categorized by name, then place the name categories in parent categories. For example, Category:Images of Mara Jade Skywalker is a child category of Category:Images of Humans, Category:Images of females Category:Images of individuals by name/S, Category:Images of individuals affiliated with the Galactic Empire, Category:Images of individuals affiliated with the New Republic, Category:Images of individuals affiliated with the New Jedi Order, and Category:Images of individuals affiliated with the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, so an image placed in Category:Images of Mara Jade Skywalker does not need to be labeled with any of those other categories.

To properly categorize an image, use the last four fields of the {{Information}} template:

Artist goes in "cat artist", source goes in "cat licensee," subject in "cat subject," and type in "cat type." Do not place image categories outside the template. These fields may need to be added by hand, as a bot is still working to insert them in all properly templated images. Please apply the information template to any images that do not already have it.

• I started a breakdown of the possible categories above. It shows how insanely complex this can get. It may be best to start with the "type" and "licensee" categories, since "subject" is just confusing. —Xwing328^(Talk) 15:15, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
  • Also, I just had an idea (based on somebody's suggestion before): Add three new fields to {{Information}} so that we can tell when an image is fully/correctly categorized, something like:

From now on, I think we should categorize images from comics into story arc, not individual issues. I've already set that in place for the Tales of the Jedi and Knights of the Old Republic series. - JMAS 19:41, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

• It doesn't help us. Get as specific as possible with images. Put the issues themselves into the story arc categories. As much as I rely on TPB, we shouldn't cater to them. And if we must, then put the storyarcs into their respective TPB categories. --Redemption^(Talk) 02:20, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Pet peeve: a lot of people aren't categorizing their "images of individuals" properly. All characters should fall into at least three categories: gender, species, and name (A-Z), and most characters will also have an occupation or affiliation. People seem to have a blind spot especially for the nonhuman characters. Ewoks are only categorized as Ewoks, Rodians only as Rodians, etc. Like it or not, Ewoks have sex, too, so let's remember to list them that way. Please? I'm fixing them as I find them, but it's not easy to track them down. Enochf 15:05, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Here's a question: File:Jack Klaff.jpg needs to be categorized, but it's a screenshot from a non-Star Wars film. How do we deal with it and similar possible images when categorizing by source? —Silly Dan _(talk) 00:31, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
