"Commander Rex, this is CT-0292. I think we have something."
"I'll be right there, Captain."
―Vaughn and Ahsoka Tano — (audio) Listen (file info)[4]

Vaughn, designated CT-0292, was a clone of the human Jango Fett who served as a Clone Captain within the 332nd Company, part of a division of the 501st Legion that was assigned to Clone Commander Rex and former Jedi Padawan and Advisor Ahsoka Tano. As a soldier in service to the Republic Military of the Galactic Republic, Captain Vaughn participated in the Siege of Mandalore toward the end of the Clone Wars between the allied forces of the Mandalore resistance and Galactic Republic and the forces of the former Sith apprentice Maul. During the siege, Vaughn led troopers of the division in the capital city of Sundari and chased Maul's Mandalorian super commandos into the Undercity.

After being lured into an ambush, Vaughn's clone troopers were killed, and Vaughn soon succumbed to the same fate. Ahsoka Tano, who was accompanying the troopers, arrived at the scene and witnessed the captain's final moments. Following their death, the Republic and Mandalore resistance ultimately won the siege.

Clone Captain Vaughn led their troops during the Siege of Mandalore.

Vaughn was a clone of the human male bounty hunter Jango Fett born on the planet Kamino.[1] Designated CT-0292, the clone eventually rose to the rank of Clone Captain of the Grand Army of the Republic and served the 332nd Company within the 332nd Division of the 501st Legion during the Clone Wars.[4] In 19 BBY,[2] they participated in the initial assault of the Siege of Mandalore when the combined might of both the Galactic Republic and Mandalore resistance attacked the city of Sundari[4] on the planet[5] Mandalore, where they hoped to capture former Sith apprentice Maul. Vaughn survived the initial landing, where the division took control of the docks, effectively trapping Maul and his supporters inside the city. The captain and their clone troopers would then advance into the city, taking losses but forcing Maul's Mandalorian super commandos, led by Gar Saxon, to retreat.[4]

As the battle progressed to the Undercity, Vaughn spotted Saxon moving into a tunnel and contacted Commander Rex and former Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano, who was officially acting as an advisor and acting commander to the Republic forces on Mandalore. After they showed Tano where Saxon had retreated, the advisor asked if they led outside the city, to which the captain replied that they did not know. Tano then ordered Vaughn to move in alongside her, and they led a unit of clones to track down Maul's escaping super commandos.[4]

Vaughn and their troops cautiously began their advance through the tunnels, but when Maul's supporters attacked them, Vaughn and the squad chased their attackers further into the Undercity and, in their haste, left Tano behind. Before the advisor could catch up, the squad was separated and methodically picked off, with all troopers being eventually killed. Vaughn was among the last survivors but was critically wounded by a blaster shot to the chest. When Tano arrived at the scene, she held Vaughn's hand as they said their final words, apologizing to her for their failure. Shortly after Vaughn's death, Maul and his super commandos cornered Tano.[4] Despite Vaughn's death, the Republic and Mandalore resistance ultimately emerged victorious from the Siege of Mandalore.[6]

Personality and traits

"I'm sorry, Commander."
―Vaughn, to Ahsoka Tano, shortly before their death — (audio) Listen (file info)[4]

Vaughn was a clone of bounty hunter Jango Fett[4] who stood 1.83 meters (6 feet) tall,[1] weighed eighty kilograms,[3] and had tan skin.[1] Despite Ahsoka Tano no longer being part of the Republic Military, they still respectfully referred to her as "Commander" and would customize their armor to resemble her facial markings when she returned to their ranks. They proved eager to rush into combat, leading to their demise in the Undercity of Sundari. Feeling that they had failed, Vaughn was apologetic in their last moments, telling Tano that they were sorry for allowing themself and their troops to be ambushed.[4]

Equipment

At birth, like the other clone troopers, Vaughn was implanted by the Kaminoan scientists with a behavioral modification biochip to ensure that the trooper would not resist certain orders.[1] Vaughn wore Phase II clone trooper armor with the blue markings of the 501st Legion and a customized helmet emblazoned with a stylized version of Ahsoka Tano's facial tattoos, which also covered their visor. While on Mandalore, they were equipped with a DC-15A blaster rifle and a jetpack, and their helmet and shoulder armor included integrated antennae.[4] They also wielded a DC-15A blaster carbine.[7] Their helmet included a modified chin extension and dark red lines that were distinguished from the color used for the stylized face of Tano. While searching the Undercity for Saxon and his forces, Vaughn equipped a light attachment on their helmet. They donned a rank insignia plaque on their chest armor.[4]

Behind the scenes

Concept art of Vaughn

Vaughn first appeared in "Old Friends Not Forgotten," the ninth episode of the canon animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars' seventh season,[4] which first aired on April 17, 2020.[8] The character was first pictured in a promotional poster for the season, posted by the official Star Wars Twitter account on January 22, 2020.[9]

Dee Bradley Baker provided Vaughn's voice for the episode, along with all other clone troopers in the series.[4] According to concept art from Kilian Plunkett created on June 25, 2018, their character model was repurposed from that of Commander Cody, who also appeared in the ninth episode. Additionally, Vaughn's name is written as "Vaughan" in the episode guide's concept gallery on StarWars.com. However, the guide's episode gallery also refers to them by the former name,[10] and the spelling of their name in the episode's subtitles matches the spelling "Vaughn."[4]

The 2023 LEGO set 75359 332nd Ahsoka's Clone Trooper Battle Pack erroneously depicts Vaughn without any of the dark red markings on their helmet. Additionally, the rank plaque on their chest is depicted entirely with blue tiles,[11] while the plaque in canon media also has red and gray tiles.[4]
