"Each Initiate's name is inscribed on one of these Vagni stones. We shall pick one at random, using only the Force. Come forward when your name is called."
―Yula Braylon — (audio) Listen (file info)[1]

Vagni stones were a type of stones used in the Initiate Trials of Jedi Order younglings. The stones were engraved with the competing Initiates' names and then whirled in a container with the Force and selected at random. In 86 BBY, Jedi Masters Yula Braylon and Tera Sinube used Vagni stones during the Initiate Trials to choose dueling partners, with their first pair chosen being the Initiates Dooku and Sifo-Dyas.

Description[]

Vagni stones[2] were a type of small, round stones used in Jedi culture. The stones were used to determine combat opponents in the Initiate Trials, a series of tests that younglings of the Jedi Order were given as prerequisite in order to progress to the rank of Padawan. Vagni stones were engraved with the names of competing Initiates and then placed in a container. The stones were then whirled around inside the container using the Force and were picked at random to select an opponent.[1]

History[]

"The first combatant is… Initiate Dooku!"
―Tera Sinube, using Vagni stones during the Initiate Trials[1]

Tera Sinube (pictured) and Yula Braylon used Vagni stones in the Initiate Trials in 86 BBY.

In 86 BBY,[3] a group of Initiates, which included Dooku, Sifo-Dyas, and Zang Arraira, underwent the trials. Jedi Masters Yula Braylon and Tera Sinube used the Vagni stones to choose combatants in the trials, with the former explaining to the younglings what the stones were used for. The pair then used the Force to swirl the stones and select the duelists, the first of which were Dooku and Sifo-Dyas.[1]

Dooku later told his sister, Jenza, about the events in a holo-letter.[1] Around 23 BBY,[4] Dooku gave several data disks containing his messages to Jenza to his recently recruited Sith assassinAsajj Ventress—for her investigation into his sister's location, and she listened to the holo-disk that mentioned the Vagni stones' usage.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Vagni stones appeared in a flashback in the audio drama Dooku: Jedi Lost, written by Cavan Scott[1] and published on April 30, 2019.[5] The spelling and capitalization of Vagni stones was confirmed by the audio drama's script release[2] on October 1 of the same year.[5]
