"Why are you doing this to me?"
―The prisoner, to Moff Kentor Sarne[1]

A female prisoner was held by Moff Kentor Sarne, Imperial warlord of the Kathol sector, during the early years of the New Republic. Placing her in an observation cell, the Moff attempted to feed her to Kl'aal—his Defel assassin who had a taste for eating freshly killed meat—for his own entertainment. As the prisoner cowered and pleaded to be told why Sarne was punishing her, Kl'aal refused to be goaded by the Moff into giving in to his urges, preferring to starve rather than kill.

Biography[]

"What are you talking about?"
"Silence, prisoner! I'm not speaking to you, but the shadows."
―The prisoner and Moff Kentor Sarne[1]

During the early years of the New Republic, a woman was held prisoner by Moff Kentor Sarne, Imperial warlord of the Kathol sector in the Outer Rim Territories. Subjected to the Moff's "entertainments" during her incarceration, she was eventually deposited in an observation cell. Too shocked to fight back against her captor, the woman cowered against one of the cell's walls, pleading to be told why she was being punished. In response, Moff Sarne—watching the interior of the cell from the transparisteel window above—made strange comments, referencing a "wraith" and the need to test the loyalty of his servants. The woman did not understand Sarne; unknown to her, she was not the only occupant of the cell. A Defel named Kl'aal was hidden in the shadows opposite her.[1] Kl'aal was the Moff's personal assassin, who had developed a taste for freshly killed meat after crash landing on a remote planet. Kl'aal had struck a deal with Sarne to serve as his assassin in exchange for the chance to indulge his hunger.[2] Sarne was attempting to goad Kl'aal into killing the woman and eating her for his own amusement.[1]

The woman, confused by Sarne's words, asked the Moff what he meant. Sarne told her to shut up, and said he was speaking to the shadows, not her. Kl'aal let out a growl directed toward the Moff, and the woman retreated into the far corner and began to sob. As the woman cowered in the corner, Sarne continued to bait his assassin, telling him that he would starve if he did not eat the woman. Kl'aal remained hidden in the shadows, and refused to participate. To him, the woman was not prey, and he would rather starve than kill an innocent.[1]

Personality and traits[]

A prisoner of Moff Sarne, the woman was subjected to punishments that shocked and broken her. When forced into a corner, her first instinct was to cower and cry rather than fight back.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The woman appeared in the short story Feeding Time, which was published in The DarkStryder Campaign by West End Games in 1995. The story served as background for the character of Kl'aal, one of the main characters in the series.[1]
