"The needles have stood for millennia. Many have tried to climb them. Many have failed. They are fragile and old. And I have hidden a Tythonian pendant at the top of one of the peaks."
―Sskeer, to Keeve Trennis[1]

A Tythonian pendant[2] was a type of artifact[1] that shared its name with the Deep Core world Tython.[3] In 232 BBY,[4] Jedi Master Sskeer hung a pendant at the top of one of the needles—a rock formation—on the Republic Frontier planet Shuraden, tasking his Padawan Keeve Trennis with retrieving it for her Jedi Trials. After some of the needles were damaged by Ridadi—giant insects—Trennis mentally questioned whether the pendant was still where her Master had left it. Instead of recovering the pendant as she believed she should, the Padawan saved a nearby Ximpi city the Ridadi had threatened.[1]

Believing she had failed her trials, Trennis accompanied Sskeer to the space station Starlight Beacon. After being brought before Jedi Master Avar Kriss, the Padawan asked if she could retake her trial, but Kriss instead knighted her. Trennis later noted that her Master had taken her to Shuraden as part of a test as he knew what would happen.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

A Tythonian pendant was mentioned in the first issue of the 2021 comic series Star Wars: The High Republic. The issue was written by Cavan Scott and published by Marvel Comics[1] on January 6, 2021, as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's Phase I.[5] The capitalization of the pendant was confirmed in The High Republic 1 Behind-the-Scenes Exclusive, a comic[2] released on April 7, 2021[6] that presents the unfinalized script and artwork from The High Republic 1.[2]
