Tristan Wren, the brother of Sabine Wren, was a Mandalorian human male. He was the son of Alrich and Ursa Wren, who led Clan Wren. After Sabine deserted the Imperial Academy on Mandalore, Tristan was forced to join Gar Saxon's Super Commandos in order to keep their clan's dignity. In 2 BBY, Tristan reunited with his sister Sabine after she and her rebel companions tried to convince Clan Wren to aid the rebellion. When Gar Saxon ordered the destruction of Clan Wren, Tristan chose his family and joined the rebels and Fenn Rau in defeating Saxon and his warriors.

Tristan later helped Sabine and her rebel allies to evacuate the Phoenix Cell during the Battle of Atollon. He and his family fought against Clan Saxon and the Galactic Empire during the Mandalorian Civil War.

By the end of the Galactic Civil War, Tristan, along with his parents, was killed during the Night of a Thousand Tears, leaving his sister as the only survivor and member of Clan Wren.

Background[]

Tristan Wren was the son of Alrich Wren, Countess Ursa Wren and the younger brother of Sabine Wren,^[6] born at some point after Sabine's birth in 21 BBY.^[2]

After Sabine abandoned the Imperial Academy on Mandalore and joined the rebellion, Clan Wren's loyalties to the Empire were called into question. Tristan was forced to join Viceroy Gar Saxon's Imperial Super Commandos in order to prove his family's loyalty to Saxon and the Galactic Empire. His father was also kept a hostage of Saxon on Mandalore to guarantee his family's loyalty. Tristan lived with his mother Ursa Wren on the planet Krownest,^[6] their family's homeworld.^[1]

Reunion with Sabine[]

In 2 BBY,^[8] Tristan led a patrol of Clan Wren warriors which intercepted and shot down Sabine's shuttle Phantom II. Sabine and her rebel comrades Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, Fenn Rau, and Chopper were traveling on a mission to Krownest to solicit Clan Wren's support for the rebellion. After the Phantom II crashed on the snow, Tristan and his comrades confronted Sabine, Kanan, and Ezra. Tristan initially did not recognize Sabine because she was wearing her Mandalorian helmet. When Ezra ignited his green lightsaber, Tristan and his companions opened fire, leading to a brief firefight. When he heard Sabine's voice, Tristan ordered a cease fire and removed his helmet.^[6]

While Tristan was friendly towards Sabine and her rebel friends and agreed to lead them to the Wren Stronghold, he warned Sabine that he could not vouch for their mother's hospitality. During the journey, Sabine confronted Tristan about his Imperial Super Commando armor. Tristan warned that she should not have returned since her family still regarded her as a traitor. Upon arriving at the Wren Stronghold, Ursa ordered Sabine's incarceration but Sabine managed to convince her mother to grant her and her friends an audience by showing the Darksaber, an important symbol of House Vizsla; of which Clan Wren was a member. Ursa reluctantly acceded to her daughter's request but ordered the rebels to surrender their weapons.^[6]

Inside the throne room, Tristan and his warriors maintained a vigil as Ursa appraised her daughter of their family's circumstances. Tristan and his mother regarded the Mandalorian Protectors and their leader Fenn Rau as traitors and sought to justify the Protectors' execution by Saxon. After Ursa and Sabine left for a private meeting, the Jedi Rebels Ezra tried to make light conversation with Tristan. However, Kanan insisted on handling the negotiations and told Tristan that he desired an audience with Countess Ursa. Tristan later informed his mother and sister that Gar Saxon was requesting a hologram conversation with Ursa. Still on good terms with Sabine, Tristan invited her for a sparring session in the training room.^[6]

While sparring with metal rods, Sabine thanked Tristan for practicing with her. When Sabine asked if he thought she was a traitor, Tristan told her he did not think so but that the other clans viewed them with suspicion. Tristan vowed to help restore his family's standing to protect their father. Tristan then informed his sister of their mother's plan to trade the rebels and the Darksaber with Saxon in return for their safety. Tristan followed Sabine to the throne room where they discovered Gar Saxon and his Super Commandos taking the Jedi rebels and the Darksaber into their custody. When Sabine protested, Tristan told her that it was for the best.^[6]

When Ursa demanded that Saxon uphold his side of the bargain, Saxon ordered his men to exterminate Clan Wren for "colluding" with rebels. Tristan protested but Saxon gave him the choice of standing by him or dying with his family. Tristan chose his family and pointed his blaster at Saxon. The Wrens and rebels were aided by Rau, who handed the Jedi their weapons and helped the rebels and Clan Wren defeat Saxon's warriors. Tristan shot the last of Saxon's Super Commandos. Tristan and and the others then watched as Sabine dueled with Saxon on the ice outside their stronghold, using Ezra's lightsaber. Sabine managed to defeat Saxon and reclaimed the Darksaber. However, she spared Saxon's life. When Saxon tried to kill her, Ursa shot him dead.^[6]

Sabine's defeat of Saxon regained her family's respect. Sabine and Fenn elected to stay behind with Tristan and his mother to help them reunify the Mandalorian people in the wake of Saxon's death. Tristan and his family watched as Ezra and Kanan departed aboard the Phantom II to rejoin the rebellion. Tristan and the others listened as Sabine vowed to help them find Mandalore's true leader.^[6]

Civil War[]

Battle of Atollon[]

Following the death of Gar Saxon, Clan Wren was involved in a civil war against the Imperial-backed Clan Saxon. Clan Wren's forces were stretched thin defending their holdings. When Ezra Bridger and the rebel astromech droid Chopper returned with news of Grand Admiral Thrawn's siege of Chopper Base, Tristan was sympathetic to the rebels but shared his mother Ursa Wren's view that Clan Wren could not assist the rebels. Following some discussion, Ursa relented and allowed Ezra and Sabine to depart with several volunteers and ships. Tristan accompanied Sabine's strike team and took part in a successful assault on an Interdictor-class Star Destroyer. The interdictor cruiser's destruction enabled the surviving Phoenix Cell forces to retreat to Yavin 4. This action solidified the alliance between Clan Wren and the Rebel Alliance.^[9]

While combating Imperial forces on Mandalore, Tristan accompanied his sister on a mission through rocky cliffs, approaching a large and ancient statue of Tarre Vizsla. Tristan asked her how she knew the place so well, and Sabine explained that their father brought her to see the statue when she was a child and he was still an infant. As they approached the statue, both used their helmets' macrobinocular viewplates and rangefinders to see the Imperial stormtroopers and the outpost built around it. Although Tristan was hesitant and unwilling to risk getting caught and jeopardize their mission for the sake of a statue, Sabine insisted the statue was too important to Mandalore's history to leave in Imperial hands. Tristan sighed and remarked that he liked her better when she was off in space, but followed Sabine.

The two climbed the statue and while he planted detonators across the outpost's structure, Sabine wielded the Darksaber to slice its metal support beams. After successfully avoiding the stormtroopers' sight, they retreated to a safe distance and Tristan activated the detonators and destroyed the outpost. Tarre Vizsla's statue freed, they climbed up to its face and Tristan remarked the statue looked happy, admitting they did the right thing, "for Mandalore."^[10]

Mission to Mandalore[]

Tristan accompanied his family, Fenn Rau, Clan Wren's forces, and several Spectres members on a campaign against Governor Tiber Saxon and the Empire on Mandalore. Tristan remained with his mother Ursa while Sabine led a strike team to rescue their father Alrich from an Imperial prison. Ursa subsequently received intelligence that the Empire had already moved Alrich and had set a trap at the prison. After Lady Bo-Katan Kryze's forces helped Sabine's forces to defeat the Imperial garrison, Tristan arrived with his mother, who informed Sabine that Alrich was being transported by an Imperial convoy to the capital Sundari for execution.^[7]

While Sabine and her allies freed Alrich, Tristan and his mother commanded a successful skirmish against Governor Saxon's Imperial Super Commandos. With the battle going in Clan Wren's favor, Tristan and Ursa were contacted by Sabine, who informed them of their victory. While Ursa was reporting on their victory, Tristan spotted the arrival of a single Imperial reinforcement: a modified All Terrain Defense Pod. This walker was equipped with an Arc Pulse Generator known as the "Duchess," which was capable of incinerating Mandalorian warriors. The "Duchess" reacted against the beskar alloy inside the armor, incinerating the warriors and leaving behind charred armor.^[7]

Due to Sabine's warning, Tristan and Ursa managed to take shelter and survived the massacre. The two were later rescued by Sabine's forces, who evacuated aboard one of Lady Bo-Katan's ships. During the journey, Tristan and the others learned about Sabine's role in creating the weapon during her Imperial Academy days. After arriving at Lady Bo-Katan's base, Sabine offered to lead an assault to destroy the "Duchess" and the associated data in order to make amends for her wrongs. The weapon and the data was stored aboard Governor Saxon's Star Destroyer, which was docking above Sundari. Tristan volunteered to join his sister's strike team.^[7]

During the assault, Tristan and Fenn Rau fought Imperial forces in the hangar bay of Saxon's Star Destroyer while Sabine and Bo-Katan destroyed the weapon, causing an explosion which engulfed the Star Destroyer. Meanwhile, the Spectres Ezra, Chopper, and Kanan deleted the data. Tristan and his rebel and Mandalorian comrades escaped the Star Destroyer before it crashed to the ground. Following the destruction of the "Duchess," Tristan and his family joined the other Mandalorian clans in pledging allegiance to Lady Bo-Katan, who inherited the Darksaber and the mantle of Mandalorian leadership.^[7]

Towards the end of the Galactic Civil War, the empire massacred the Mandalorian people in the Great Purge of Mandalore. Tristan, along with the rest of Clan Wren perished in the Night of a Thousand Tears. Sabine, who had been on Lothal since Thrawn's defeat on Lothal five years prior, had survived. The loss of her family drove Sabine to train to be a Jedi under the apprenticeship of Ahsoka Tano. Ultimately, Tano ended the training, fearing that Sabine's emotions over the loss of her family was the only driving force of her training. Baylan Skoll would recount the deaths of Tristan and his parents during his confrontation with Sabine Wren on Seatos^[11] in 9 ABY,^[12] where the fallen Jedi Knight observed that with the loss of her clan, Wren considered the missing Ezra Bridger the only "family" she had left. In turn, it allowed Skoll to persuade Wren to surrender in order to find Bridger.^[11] The Purge and the loss of Clan Wren was recounted to Ezra Bridger on the extragalactic planet of Peridea by architect droid professor Huyang.^[13]

Personality and traits[]

Tristan Wren was a male Mandalorian youth with black hair and brown eyes. He was a capable but conflicted warrior. While Tristan loved his family, he grappled with his sister Sabine's decision to abandon the Imperial Academy and join the rebellion. Tristan was loyal to Clan Wren and sought to protect his family's interests by serving as an Imperial Super Commando. Despite his Imperial alignment, Tristan remained on good terms with his sister and treated her with respect and love. When Gar Saxon ordered his family's execution, Tristan chose his family and helped them and their rebel allies defeat Saxon and his Commandos.^[6]

As a pragmatist, Tristan was sympathetic to the rebels but opined that Clan Wren lacked the resources to render assistance to the rebels at Atollon. He later reconsidered and took part in a successful operation to disable one of Thrawn's Interdictor cruisers, allowing the Phoenix Squadron to escape.^[9] Tristan later helped his mother Ursa to command Clan Wren's forces during the civil war against Clan Saxon and the Empire. He was loyal to his family and helped Sabine to destroy the "Duchess," an Imperial energy weapon capable of reacting with Mandalorian armor.^[7]

Tristan Wren was a Mandalorian warrior whose skills included marksmanship, melee combat, and the use of Mandalorian armor and vambraces.^[9] He possessed remarkable warrior abilities, much like his sister,^[14] and matched well against her in a fight. Tristan was capable at using weapons including a blaster rifle, blaster pistol, and a staff^[6] and also knew how to operate a jetpack.^[7]

Equipment[]

As an Imperial Super Commando, Tristan Wren wore white Mandalorian armor with yellow and red accents on the shoulders and a white helmet and jetpack. He also used a blaster rifle for combat.^[6]

After leaving the Super Commandos, Wren wore a suit of Mandalorian armor made out of beskar with the gray and yellow coloring typical of Clan Wren warriors with a pair of matching vambraces and a helmet^[7] equipped with a macrobinocular viewplate and rangefinder.^[10] He also carried a a pair of WESTAR-35 blaster pistols. On the right shoulder, Wren's armor was marked with an illustration of a loth-cat^[7] by his sister Sabine Wren.^[15]

Behind the scenes[]

"The idea of Sabine having a sibling has been a story thread evolving over the course of the series. In series preproduction, Sabine was to have a twin sister name Sacha. Later, it was changed to a brother, and at one point, the character was to be the Protector of Concord Dawn."

Tristan Wren made his first appearance in "Legacy of Mandalore," an episode of the third season of Star Wars Rebels. He was voiced by Ritesh Rajan.^[6] In the early development of the episode, his name was Jona Wren. Sabine having a sibling was an idea the Rebels producers had since during initial development of the show, but they originally intended for her to have a twin sister called Sacha. They eventually changed her sibling's gender and considered introducing him earlier as a Mandalorian Protector, but he was replaced by the new character named Fenn Rau.^[16]
