The Tomb Guardians were ancient automatons constructed by the Zeffonian species. They protected the sacred tombs and crypts on the planet Zeffo, attacking intruders due to a programmed response, rather than out of malice or defense.[1] Tomb Guardians were also present in a temple on the planet Ontotho.[2] Tomb Guardians were powered by a power core located above the central abdomen. Tomb Guardians could blast energy out of the core.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Tomb Guardians were created for the 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, developed by Respawn Entertainment.[1] Concept art for the Tomb Guardians was done by Jean-Francois Rey and Bruno Werneck.[3] They were first pictured on a variant cover for the comic Jedi Fallen Order - Dark Temple 1, published by Marvel Comics[4] on September 4, 2019.[5] Tomb Guardians first appeared in Jedi Fallen Order - Dark Temple 4, written by Matthew Rosenberg, illustrated by Paolo Villanelli,[2] and published on November 13, 2019.[6]

The Tomb Guardians were the most challenging enemies to design for Respawn Entertainment. The design was made to clearly evoke the old Zeffonians, as well as to feel like ancient technology that would be unusual in the Star Wars galaxy.[3]
