"When she talked about the past it seemed real, you know? The suffering before the Great Time of Peace wasn't ancient history, but just yesterday, and the people who lived through it mattered."
―Ian Lago, speaking of Padmé Amidala[4]

The Time of Suffering was a period of war between the Human city-states of the planet Naboo, lasting from approximately 1032 BBY to 832 BBY. General Jafan ended the conflict by uniting the city-states, after which he became king of Naboo and the city Theed became the new planetary capital.

The conflict[]

The Time of Suffering was a series of brutal wars between the city-states of the Human Naboo people on the Mid Rim planet Naboo.[1] It began around 1032 BBY[2] and lasted around 200 years until a general named Jafan united the city-states through his will and military might, ending the conflict in 832 BBY.[1]

Aftermath[]

"I paint my lips red and add the red scar of remembrance that splits my lip. It is a Naboo ruling tradition, older than memory, that marks a time of suffering for Naboo, before the Great Time of Peace."
―Queen Padmé Amidala, in her journal[5]
Theed

Theed (pictured) became the capital of Naboo in the aftermath of the Time of Suffering.

Shortly after the end of the Time of Suffering, the small city of Theed rapidly expanded due to an influx of artisans, engineers, and farmers[6] and was inaugurated as Naboo's capital.[3] Jafan became king of the Royal House of Naboo, ushering in the Great Time of Peace for Naboo.[7] Later monarchs would traditionally wear the scar of remembrance, a red painted line on their lips,[5] and the name of the Time of Suffering was used in Naboo history books.[1]

During her time as Princess of Theed, Padmé Amidala gave speeches that, according to her admirer Ian Lago, made the individuals who had experienced the Time of Suffering seem contemporary and significant.[4] When Amidala became queen of Naboo[5] in 33 BBY,[8] she wrote about the significance of the scar of remembrance in her journal.[5]

In 1 ABY,[9] the Deftoi of Muntro VI, a world in the Outer Rim Territories, staged an edition of their decennial Otherworld Arts Festival. The festival included a quasi-operatic performance depicting the events of the Time of Suffering. For this purpose, the Deftoi requested the Office of the Music Advisor of Naboo to provide carcasses of Naboo animals for the show.[10]

Behind the scenes[]

The event that would eventually be named the Time of Suffering was first mentioned in the 1999 reference book Star Wars: Episode I The Visual Dictionary by David West Reynolds.[11] Its proper name was subsequently given in the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry.[3]

The Time of Suffering was indirectly mentioned in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[10] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[12] In a cut quest, Queen Kylantha of Naboo lost the ceremonial makeup used for creating the scar of remembrance and compared that suffering to the experiences of the Naboo during the Time of Suffering. The player would have been requested to retrieve the makeup.[13]

  2. 2.0 2.1 Nexus of Power states that the Time of Suffering lasted approximately 200 standard years and places the construction of Theed at the end of the Time of Suffering in 832 BBY. Therefore, the Time of Suffering must have begun around 1032 BBY.

  8. The Essential Atlas places the beginning of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, and therefore the beginning of the Invasion of Naboo, on the date 3:4:14 in the Great ReSynchronization dating system, and The New Essential Chronology establishes that Padmé Amidala became queen of Naboo six months before the invasion. Therefore, Amidala's coronation must have taken place around 2:10 in the Great ReSynchronization dating system, which corresponds to 33 BBY per the reasoning here.
  9. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
