96th Task Force

Admiral Thrawn's 96th Task Force over Batonn

A task force,[2] or operational force,[3] was a term describing a group of starships in the Republic Navy,[2] the Alliance Fleet,[4] the New Republic Defense Fleet,[5], the Xodlak fleet[6] or the Imperial Navy. In the Imperial Navy, they were known to be smaller than an Imperial fleet, and were usually under the command of a commodore[7] or admiral whose flagship was an Imperial-class Star Destroyer. Examples of Imperial task forces included the One Oh Third Task Force of Admiral Durril; the One Twenty-Fifth task force of Admiral Kinshara;[8] Task Force 231, which Commodore Faro expected to command;[7] and the task force of Admiral Gendling.[8] In the Kilji Illumine, theocracy of the Kilji species, a Kilji war cruiser and a Kilji war cruiser were considered a small task force. General Crofyp's task force consisted of the Anvil and the Hammer.[9]

Thrawn received command of the 96th Task Force shortly after his promotion to admiral, although he later gave up the position so he could command the 7th Fleet after another promotion, this time to grand admiral. His ISD, the Chimaera, moved with Thrawn through his different positions. It became flagship of the 96th Task Force once Thrawn became commander of it, and left with the grand admiral to become the command ship of the 7th Fleet.[8]

The Malastare-Sullust Joint Task Force kept order in a sector of the Mid Rim.[10] Task forces were also utilized by the Grysk Hegemony, an empire that ruled in the Unknown Regions.[11]

Task forces were not only used in a navy. Task Force 99 was an elite SCAR trooper squad in the Imperial Army commanded by Sergeant Kreel.[12] Following the First Order's destruction of the Hosnian system, the remaining New Republic senators dissolved the remaining task forces to protect their respective homeworlds.[5]
