"The seeds of misfortune, when in peaceful soil, can be easy to overlook."
―Tajin Crosser[1]

Tajin Crosser, a Force-sensitive human male, was a Jedi Master of the Jedi Order who lived during the Republic Era. A noted explorer, Crosser had a long career as a patrolman in the Outer Rim Territories, and some stories of his travels claimed that he had visited more planets than any other Jedi. After a brief hiatus to begin training a Padawan learner, Dan G'vash, Crosser returned to patrolling sectors in the Outer Rim with G'vash at his side. On one such mission, Crosser sensed a profound disturbance in the Force. Crosser and G'vash's investigation brought them to the near-isolated planet Habo, where they learned from locals of a mysterious elder being.

Crosser and G'vash split up to investigate the elder, who Crosser began to suspect was somehow related to the long-extinct Sith Order, the ancient enemies of the Jedi. G'vash was the first to encounter the elder and alerted Crosser, but he ignored Crosser's orders not to engage and dueled with the being, resulting in a serious injury. Crosser rushed to his Padawan's location, where the pacifist dueled the elder and managed to defeat him with help from his injured apprentice. As he died, the elder remotely detonated hisstarship before crumbling into dust, leaving Crosser and G'vash unable to discover the unknown man's identity.

Biography[]

Patrolling the Outer Rim[]

"Do you have any idea how many planets you've visited so far?"
"Oh, let me think. I really couldn't say off the top of my head."
"Well, you must hold the Jedi record for most planets visited, based on all the stories I've heard, anyway."
"Well, I really doubt that."
―Dan G'vash and Tajin Crosser[1]

Tajin Crosser served the Jedi Order hundreds of years after the supposed destruction of the Sith,[1] the ancient enemies of the Jedi, in the Jedi-Sith War around 1032 BBY.[3] As a Jedi Master, Crosser often volunteered himself in service across the galaxy, patrolling sections of the Outer Rim Territories on behalf of the Jedi. Because of his storied career as a traveler, Crosser was familiar with many of the cultures he encountered and was said to hold the record of most planets visited by a member of the Jedi Order. However, he doubted he could claim such an achievement. Crosser's work as a patrolman came to a brief hiatus when he took on Dan G'vash as his Padawan learner, after which he dedicated his time to training his apprentice. At some point during G'vash's training, however, Crosser decided to return to his former work alongside his Padawan, believing he could incorporate it into his lessons. Crosser volunteered himself and his Padawan for missions in the Outer Rim, and he was assigned to areas where Jedi-led patrolling had been postponed.[1]

Though Crosser was eager to return to the Outer Rim, his apprentice Dan G'vash found the experience underwhelming.

Although Crosser was eager to return to his old duties, G'vash was underwhelmed by the experience since he believed the Outer Rim would be full of action and stimulation, only to find their work peaceful and slow. One day, while on patrol, Crosser entered the cockpit of their ship, where G'vash was watching hyperspace through the window. After asking if his apprentice was okay, Crosser told G'vash they would be making another hyperspace jump soon. When Crosser sat down, G'vash asked him if he knew how many planets he had been to, but Crosser did not know off-hand. G'vash began talking about the stories he had heard about Crosser's numerous missions across the galaxy and mentioned that Crosser must have held the record for most planets visited by a Jedi. Tajin snickered at the notion and stated his doubt that it was true. G'vash asked Crosser why he had chosen to return to the Outer Rim, which Crosser assured him was for his apprentice's training, at which Dan expressed his disappointment at the subdued nature of their mission.[1]

Crosser responded that misfortune was easy to overlook when hidden among peace. Shortly thereafter, Crosser sensed a disturbance in the Force. He and G'vash dropped out of hyperspace, but when G'vash asked if Crosser still sense it, Crosser replied that he could not. At G'vash's questioning, Crosser described the disturbance as sinister, adding that it felt like an ancient darkness. Dan guessed that it could be related to the Sith, but Crosser disagreed because the Sith had been extinct for hundreds of years. Despite this, he decided they needed to investigate. G'vash declared they would need to fight, but Tajin chastised his Padawan for being so eager to go to battle. After the two repeated a Jedi mantra, Crosser told G'vash that the nearest inhabited planet was Habo and that they should start their investigation there. As they prepared to head to Habo, G'vash commented that their mission had finally become more exciting, a sentiment that bothered Crosser.[1]

The Elder[]

"It's the first time I've confronted such darkness. It was a terrible power he had. If I had fought him in his prime, the results may have been much different."
"However, you did defeat him, Master."
"No. What defeated the old man in the end was not me, but time. He couldn't win against the weakness that comes with age. No matter how powerful you become, know it will not last forever."
―Tajin Crosser and Dan G'vash[1]

On Habo, a planet Crosser had visited several times, the Jedi landed their ship in a field near a small farming village. G'vash took note of the beautiful mountain ranges and stated that he was going to like Habo, at which Crosser recommended he try the local dish Oon-Doon. As they approached the village, Crosser told G'vash that the people of Habo were known to be shy and asked him to stay behind while he spoke with the villagers. From two locals, Crosser learned that a mysterious elder from an unknown tribe had arrived alone on a ship that landed elsewhere in the region. The man passed through the village a couple of days before and was last seen heading into the mountains alone. When Crosser returned to G'vash, he noticed that his Padawan had already encountered some local children, which found impressive given the Habo children's bashfulness. He told his Padawan about the mysterious old man, and G'vash asked if the elder could have been the disturbance he had felt earlier, but Crosser was still unsure.[1]

Crosser speaks with G'vash while observing the elder's starship.

When Crosser told G'vash that he had not felt the presence since arriving on Habo, his apprentice hypothesized they could have been misdirected by the Force. Crosser, however, believed the old man was hiding his presence from them and that they would have to find the elder to learn more. G'vash suggested they head into the mountains, but Crosser disagreed, believing they might miss the elder if they followed him, and suggested they wait for the elder at his ship. G'vash proposed they split up instead, with Crosser staying in the village and him going into the mountains. Though still trepidatious about the situation, Crosser agreed to G'vash's plan but warned his Padawan that Habo's mountains were home to native creatures called Vamga and suggested that he take a guide to help him navigate the terrain. While G'vash set off into the mountains with the village children as his guides, Crosser joined two village leaders and went to the location of the old man's starship nearby.[1]

Upon seeing the starship, Crosser recognized its design from old holos of Sith vessels he had seen, but he was unsure what model of ship it was. He contacted G'vash to update him, and his Padawan asked if the old man was a Sith. Unable to confirm or deny the elder's identity, Crosser simply replied that he had a bad feeling. Meanwhile, G'vash saw a dead Vamga and informed Crosser that its throat had been slashed. Upon further inspection, G'vash concluded the wound had been caused by a lightsaber, worrying Crosser, who ordered G'vash to return to the village. Before he could do so, G'vrash was confronted by the elder. Sensing the old man take out a pair of lightsabers, Crosser told Dan to flee, but his Padawan took out his own blade instead. Crosser began running up the mountain to find his apprentice, and soon it started to rain. As he made his hasty ascent up the mountainside, Crosser felt G'vrash being injured with a cut to the abdomen by the old man.[1]

TajinAndTheElder

Tajin Crosser duels the mysterious elder in the mountains of Habo.

When Crosser arrived, he saw the elder sitting on a boulder with G'vash's body in front of him. The elder told Tajin that it had been a long time since he faced an opponent as strong as him, and the two readied their lightsabers. After a brief pause, the two clashed. Crosser managed to gain the upper hand and use the old man's arrogance against him and, in doing so, destroyed one of the elder's lightsabers, enraging him. The elder extended his hand and started to generate lightning from his fingertips, which Crosser recognized as an ancient Sith technique. While Tajin dodged the initial lighting strike and deflected the rest with his lightsaber, the elder prepared to strike him down. Before he could deliver the blow, however, he was hit by G'vash's blade, which the still-alive G'vash sent hurling towards him using the Force. Using this distraction to his advantage, Crosser ran his saber through the old man's chest. While Crosser ran to Dan to check on his apprentice, the dying elder used a remote to detonate his ship before crumbling into dust and ash.[1]

After the elder's death, Crosser brought his Padawan to the village to recover from his injury. Sometime later, Crosser, joined by G'vash, went to the starship only to find it in ruins. Without any way to discover the elder's identity, Crosser decided not to speculate where he was a Sith but suspected he could have once been affiliated with them. Crosser told G'vash that he had never confronted such darkness before and that had the old man been in his prime, the outcome could have been different. When G'vash countered that his master had defeated him, Crosser denied his victory and stated that time had made the elder weak. Crosser added that he, too, was growing less powerful with age and told G'vrash that he would grow more powerful, but only if he remembered his training and his kindness. Down in the field below, the Habo children looked to Dan, and Tajin told him to say goodbye. As G'vrash went to the children, Crosser looked to the remains of the elder and then gazed at the sky above.[1]

Personality and traits[]

"With power, you can protect those without it. However, like everything else, it is impermanent."
―Tajin Crosser[1]
TajinandDan

As a teacher, Tajin Crosser was lenient and kind, but still wished to impart lessons on his impatient student.

Tajin Crosser was a male[2] human with light skin, brown eyes, long black hair that he left unkempt, and a thin layer of facial hair. In addition, he also had a scar across his left eyebrow. Because of his long history as a traveler and his work patrolling the Outer Rim, Crosser was very knowledgeable about the various planets he had visited, including their terrain, wildlife, culture, and cuisine. Despite his relative fame as an explorer, Crosser was dismissive of stories promulgated about his life, finding G'vash's claim that he held the record for most planets visited by a Jedi amusing but doubtful.[1] A noted pacifist,[4] Crosser dutifully believed in the Jedi moral code and felt that balance and stillness were more valuable than aggression. In spite of his own strength and rank as a Jedi Master, Crosser thought that power was best used to help those without it, and recognized that power itself was impermanent and that seeking to attain more out of pride was pointless. As such, Crosser did not take pride in his powers, knowing they would one day wane with time.[1]

Tajin and Dan had a close bond, and both master and apprentice were cordial and faithful to each other, even though they had some differences in how they approached situations. Crosser enjoyed the peaceful nature of his work, unlike his Padawan. Where G'vash was eager and yearning for action and adventure, Crosser was content with simply patrolling regions and waiting for misfortune to rear its head. Despite their differences, they did not fight and Crosser gave G'vash leniency to make his own choices, such as letting him go into the Habo mountains without him. Crosser and G'vash also had a casual tone when speaking to each other, although Crosser remained calm and measured in his speech. G'vash was free to comment on issues he had with Crosser or their work. Tajin believed that G'vash would one day become a strong Jedi because of his training but made sure that his Padawan would remember his kindness, which he felt was an important quality for a Jedi to have.[1]

Powers and abilities[]

"It's been a while since I've come across an opponent so strong in the Force."
―The elder, speaking to Tajin[1]

Although he was wary of fighting as a means to an end, Tajin Crosser was a strong Jedi Master and was highly skilled in combat. Despite his abilities dimming with age, Crosser remained a powerful opponent in lightsaber combat. In his duel against the elder, Crosser, wielding a green lightsaber, used quick defensive techniques to counter his opponent in keeping with his pacifist beliefs and measured approach. During their duel, the elder's overconfidence gave Crosser the chance to easily maneuver one of the old man's lightsabers away from him in one swift movement, and a similarly well-time attack allowed the Jedi Master to kill him.[1]

Crosser was likewise powerful in the Force, being able to sense the presence of the elder while in hyperspace, which G'vash could not. The elder himself greatly anticipated his fight with Crosser, having sensed his strength in the Force and awaited the moment to duel him. Crosser was also strong physically; during his duel against the elder, he was able to hold his position to block the elder's Force lightning with his lightsaber.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Tajin Crosser appeared in "The Elder," a short film in the Star Wars: Visions series directed and written by Masahiko Otsuka, produced by Trigger, and released on Disney+[1] on September 22, 2021.[5] He was voiced by Takaya Hashi in the original Japanese film and by David Harbour in the English dub.[1] The character's untamed hair based on the appearance of the "ronin" of samurai films, while his clean robes indicates that even if he is an outsider, he is not fallen from society.[6]
