―Lieutenant Colvett Valeria — (audio) Listen (file info)[2]

The T-47 sandspeeder was a modified type of T-47 airspeeder manufactured by Incom Corporation, and used by the armed forces of the New Republic for combat in desert environments. With each vessel operated by a pilot and a gunner, the New Republic's Lieutenant Colvett Valeria led a squadron of sandspeeders against the Galactic Empire during the Battle of Jakku.

Sandspeeder crash

The sandspeeder was sand-colored for camouflage in desert conditions.

A variant of the snowspeeder used by the Rebel Alliance, the T-47 sandspeeder was a modified type of T-47 airspeeder manufactured by Incom Corporation.[1] Sand-colored for camouflage, the airspeeder[3] was armed with two forward-facing laser cannons capable of discharging red-colored laser bolts.[2]

Operated by two crew members, the speeder's cockpit featured positions for a forward-facing pilot and a rear-facing gunner.[3] The sandspeeder was additionally equipped with a stabilizer, a cooling vent, an energizer, and a power coupling.[2]

The sandspeeders were fitted for combat in desert locations, such as the planets Tatooine[1] and Jakku.[3]

"Come on, rebels! Let's make sure this really is the Empire's last stand."

Sandspeeder repair

The Freemakers repaired Valeria's sandspeeder during the Battle of Jakku.

The sandspeeders were used by the New Republic forces at the Battle of Jakku,[2] the final large-scale battle of the Galactic Civil War that resulted in a decisive New Republic victory against the Galactic Empire in the year 5 ABY.[4] During the battle, the Republic lieutenant Colvett Valeria commanded a squadron of sandspeeders against Imperial forces, and she was forced to crash land in front of an AT-AT after debris from a TIE fighter she destroyed hit her speeder's stabilizer.[2]

As the walker's foot was about to stomp Valeria and her vehicle, the Freemakers, a family of scavengers sided with the Republic, came to her aid and destroyed the walker. The trio then quickly repaired the lieutenant's sandspeeder, and she soon returned to the battle, blasting more TIE fighters. The event was later mentioned in From Trenches to Wrenches: The Roger Story, a memoir written by the Freemakers' B1-series battle droid, R0-GR.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

LEGO Star Wars[]

After the 2014 reboot of the Star Wars canon,[5] the sandspeeder was first seen as a LEGO toy set released in 2018 along with the merchandising for the film Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi. The set's package cover depicts a sandspeeder firing on a moisture vaporator on Jakku. Additionally, the minifigure for the sandspeeder gunner included in the set features a flight helmet that matches[3] the rebel pilot Dosmit Ræh's helmet.[6]

The speeder later appeared in "The Power at Jakku," the eighth short film of the non-canonical LEGO Star Wars: All-Stars animated series[2] that debuted on November 10, 2018.[7] The eight shorts, including "The Power at Jakku," were also collected in the All-Stars episode "From Trenches to Wrenches: The Roger Story."[8] Additionally, the 2022 LEGO reference book LEGO Star Wars Awesome Vehicles identified the vehicle as the T-47 sandspeeder.[1]

Star Wars Legends origins[]

The sandspeeder was originally created for Kenner's canceled The Epic Continues toy line.

The sandspeeder was originally created for Kenner's Star Wars-themed The Epic Continues toy line planned for a 1986 release. However, the line was ultimately canceled by Lucasfilm, and the planned action figure was revealed in the 1995 article "Tales of Phantom Toys," published in Star Wars Galaxy Magazine 2.[9]

The sandspeeder was later utilized in various Star Wars Legends media, beginning with the 1996 sourcebook Instant Adventures, published by West End Games for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.[10] The vehicle made its first Legends appearance in Onslaught at Arda I, a 2014 adventure module for Fantasy Flight Games' Star Wars: Age of Rebellion roleplaying game.[11]
