"The Signatories of Waymancy had to be stopped. Some of their number believed in fanaticism, some believed in territorial cleansing, some believed in nothing at all beyond the cold logic of machinery. But the wholesale murder of settlers and their families? That could only be practiced by those who believed in evil."
―Supreme Chancellor Nagratha[1]

The Signatories of Waymancy were a faction that fought against the Galactic Republic in the Waymancy Storm of 7811 BBY. The conflict ignited following the first contact between the Republic and warships of the Waymancy Hollow region, inside of which the Sisters of the Machinesmith had studied and improved Republic technology. Believing in fanaticism and territorial cleansing and possessing technological superiority over their enemy, the Signatories of Waymancy targeted both the Republic's military assets and its civilian settlers in the Northern Dependencies, inflicting large casualties. Eventually, however, the Republic managed to turn the tide of the conflict in its favor and ultimately emerge victorious over the Signatories' forces.

Description[]

"For while we in the Republic possessed an unquenchable fighting spirit, our enemy had a cold, automated edge. After studying our technology for a thousand years inside the Waymancy Hollow, the Sisters of the Machinesmith had improved on our designs in nearly every way."
―Supreme Chancellor Nagratha[1]

The Signatories of Waymancy shared their name with the Waymancy system.

The Signatories of Waymancy were a faction[1] that shared their name with the Inner Rim's Waymancy system,[2] the Waymancy Hollow region, and the object known as the Waymancy bridal seat. The forces allied with the Signatories of Waymancy included the armadas of the Wives of Tingrippa, the mercenary army of Whirl-Point-Six, a Neshtabine nest on the celestial body Tantara, and at least one raider from[1] the world Doshan[3] and one thug from[1] the planet Muzara.[4]

According to a later description by the Galactic Republic's Supreme Chancellor Nagratha, the beliefs of the constituent members of the Signatories included fanaticism, territorial cleansing, and the "cold logic of machinery." Although, during the conflict known as the Waymancy Storm, the Republic armed forces exhibited great determination in their fight against the Signatories of Waymancy and outnumbered those of the Signatories a hundred to one, the latter possessed a significant edge due to technological superiority, including warships that could fly farther and faster than those used by the Republic and energy shields and pulse-wave weaponry—both starship-mounted and personal-scale—that outclassed the Republic's military equipment.[1]

History[]

"Though we outnumbered our enemies a hundred to one, the frightful killing machines wielded by tyrants absent of conscience inflicted terrible losses in our ranks."
―Supreme Chancellor Nagratha[1]

Inside the Waymancy Hollow, the group known as the Sisters of the Machinesmith studied and improved upon the Galactic Republic's technology for a millennium leading up to 7811 BBY.[1] That year, the Republic established disastrous first contact with warships associated with the Waymancy Hollow. The encounter led to the Waymancy Storm,[5] which was waged between the Republic and the Signatories of Waymancy in several star systems[1] in the Northern Dependencies portion of the Inner Rim and the Expansion Region.[6]

NorthernDependencies-TEA

The Waymancy Storm was fought in the Northern Dependencies between the Galactic Republic and the Signatories of Waymancy.

During the Waymancy Storm, the Signatories of Waymancy targeted both the Republic's armed forces and its civilian colonists, at one point causing the deaths of ten million settlers on the astronomical object Upper Brightday. As the war progressed, the actions of the Signatories became progressively bloodier. Eventually, however, the Republic's fortune turned due to intense efforts by its spies and codebreakers at interpreting intercepted data and scientific breakthroughs by technologists at a Republic shipyard on[1] the planet[7] Axum who attempted to reverse-engineer captured Waymancy technology.[1]

Armed with newly improved offensive and defensive capabilities, the Republic forces routed the Tantara nest and destroyed the Clowse Glowstack on the celestial body Mittoblade, ultimately also reducing the Waymancy bridal seat to a hyperspace sinkhole and achieving overall victory in the conflict. At a speech delivered on the 25th anniversary of Victory in the Waymancy Storm in 7786 BBY, Supreme Chancellor Nagratha gave a brief recount of the history of the conflict, in which they characterized the Signatories of Waymancy as "tyrants absent of conscience" and as a force of evil due to their killing of civilians. Nagratha also described the war as a "necessary" effort with the goal of stopping the Signatories' actions.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The Signatories of Waymancy were originally meant to be mentioned in the 2012 reference book The Essential Guide to Warfare by Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart; however, the section that would have mentioned the faction, authored by Daniel Wallace, was cut before the book's release. The information regarding the Signatories of Waymancy was later released in 2014 as part of Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare Author's Cut, a series of articles published on the StarWars.com Blog by Fry and[1] Del Rey editor[8] Erich Schoeneweiss containing various cut content from The Essential Guide to Warfare.[1]
