"When the Rebel Alliance seized the port city of Salline, the Empire had to move quickly to remove the infestation."
―Colonel Maximilian Veers, Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide[1]

Salline was a port city on the Core Worlds planet Chandrila. The city was home to a government center and the street Guildhead's Way. During the Galactic Civil War, it was the site of the Pacification of Salline, a battle in which Imperial forces commanded by Colonel Maximilian Veers defeated Rebel Alliance insurgents who had occupied the city.

Description[]

Salline was located on an oceanic coast of the Core Worlds[1] planet[2] Chandrila and served as a port.[1] As a Chandrilan city, it was ruled by a governor who represented the city in the planet's government, the Chandrilan House.[3] The city also had a governing council during the Imperial Period. Salline contained a government center that was situated on Guildhead's Way, a wide avenue that was at least 1.2 kilometers in length. The government center was located near multiple docks.[1]

History[]

"A deplorable overreaction. The governing council of Salline had protested the seizure of its citizens by the ISB secret police. The Imperial governor branded them traitors. This was the result."
―Alliance leader Mon Mothma, annotation to Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide[1]

During the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and Alliance to Restore the Republic, Salline's governing council was accused of treason by Chandrila's Imperial governor after it protested the arrest of some of the city's residents by the Imperial Security Bureau. As a result,[1] sometime between 2 BBY and O BBY,[4] Salline was occupied by the Alliance to Restore the Republic. The Galactic Empire responded immediately, deploying All Terrain Armored Transports, All Terrain Scout Transports, and dropships to attack the Rebels—who had fortified themselves in the government center—around sunrise, at 0200.[1]

Veers

The Pacification of Salline was led by Maximilian Veers.

The attackers were led by Colonel Maximilian Veers, who brought his forces down Guildhead's Way toward Salline's government center. 1.2 kilometers from the center, the walker Hammer 6 was fired upon by missile batteries that had been hidden in a building on the south side of Guildhead's Way. Veers promptly ordered the building destroyed, and the group moved on. The walkers were fired on again from another building 400 meters down the road, and Hammer 6 was damaged. Veers moved his walker, Hammer 8, to the front of the group.[1]

Eventually, the colonel arrived at Salline's government center and blasted open its wall. Veers ordered the Rebels to surrender, but they instead fled to nearby docks and used high-speed watercraft to escape into an ocean. Veers called in a flight of TIE fighters from the Star Destroyer Viscount, who destroyed the fleeing Rebels seven kilometers south of Salline. Veers later wrote a report on the city's pacification, which was included in the Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide, a manual distributed by the Galactic Empire to its officers immediately before the Battle of Yavin in[1] 0 BBY.[5] Eventually, the Chandrilan Alliance leader Mon Mothma obtained a copy of the handbook and noted that the Empire's response was an overreaction.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Salline was mentioned in the 2014 reference book Star Wars: Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide, which was written by Daniel Wallace.[1]

  3. Strongholds of Resistance establishes that all Chandrilan cities—which Star Wars: Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide establishes Salline to be one of—were ruled by governors, and that each of those participated in the Chandrilan House.
  4. Star Wars: Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide places the publication of the Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide before the Battle of Yavin, which The Essential Atlas dates to 0 BBY. The Pacification of Salline involves the Alliance to Restore the Republic, which was formed in 2 BBY according to the comic Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Therefore, the Pacification must have taken place sometime in between those two years.
