"Which other bounty hunters has he faced?"
"Oh, you know. Most of the greats. Rothgar Deng. Boba Fett. Krrsantan. Emim'Ai…"
―Kief Varris and Rey[2]

Rothgar Deng, possibly operating under an alias, was a Corellian bounty hunter. In an attempt to live and work forever, Deng subjected himself to cybernetic replacements, and turned to black market surgical clinics to replace damaged body parts. By the time of the war between the First Order and the Resistance, Deng was old and experienced,[1] holding a reputation for being one of the greatest bounty hunters in the galaxy.[2] According to a rumor, Deng was the bounty hunter Dengar, who had a similar name, and, like Rothgar, had cybernetic surgeries.[3] At one point, Rey listed Deng as a bounty hunter that she claimed attempted to capture Moebin Faltus. However, when repeating the list, Kief Varris replaced Rothgar Deng's name with Dengar's.[2] Deng was present on the planet Kijimi shortly before it was destroyed, but it was not known if he survived.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Rothgar Deng appeared in the 2019 film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker,[4] and was identified in the accompanying reference book Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary, written by Pablo Hidalgo.[1] While no explicit connection was made, Deng's name, background, and armor resemble that of[5] the bounty hunter Dengar, who similarly hailed from Corellia.[6] The 2020 reference text The Star Wars Book provided further similarities, stating that Dengar became almost unrecognizable after undergoing extreme surgeries following the Galactic Civil War.[7] The 2021 reference book "Din Djarin and Other Characters of the Underworld" went even further, adding that an in-universe rumor stated that Deng was in fact Dengar.[3]
