"It was a rescue. We heard through Takodana of a cell of resistance fighters who had been on the run after their city was destroyed by Nihil—lucky Nihil who stumbled upon them. They included one of the informers who've been providing the group with anti-scav codes…"
―Vernestra Rwoh, to Avar Kriss[1]

In 228 BBY, Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh of the Jedi Order undertook a six day rescue mission in Nihil space during which she rescued a resistance cell from the Occlusion Zone, a region of space controlled by the Nihil pirates. After her mission, Rwoh spoke about it with Jedi Master Avar Kriss, where she admitted she was conflicted about the mission's outcome.

Maz Kanata assisted the Republic and Jedi Order in their missions across the Stormwall

In 230 BBY, the Nihil pirate organization established the Occlusion Zone—a region of space sealed off by a hyperspace barrier known as the Stormwall.[3] At some point after the Occlusion Zone's formation, a resistance cell began operating against the Nihil from a city inside the Occlusion Zone. After some Nihil came across the city, they destroyed it, forcing the group to go on the run. Eventually, the group became known to[1] the Mid Rim planet[3] Takodana,[1] home to the pirate queen Maz Kanata.[3]

In 228 BBY,[2] during their conflict with the Nihil, the Galactic Republic and Jedi Order began undertaking a series of missions crossing the Stormwall using the Sunvale device to rescue individuals trapped in the Occlusion Zone to be brought back to Republic space. Kanata was assisting the Republic and Jedi in their missions by brokering deals with resistance groups in the Occlusion Zone to select those to be rescued. Takodana informed the Republic and Jedi about the resistance cell and the Mirialan Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh agreed to carry out the cell's rescue.[1]

The mission[]

Rwoh undertook an on-the-ground mission which lasted for six days, and she was ultimately able to rescue the resistance cell.[1]

Aftermath[]

"It was successful, but now a new informer will need to be sourced."
"Or the pressure on those remaining might grow too tight and they might snap."
"Exactly. I'm not sure if the end result is fortunate or unfortunate. I tell myself it's not part of my duty to know. That doesn't sit well, either."
―Vernestra Rwoh and Avar Kriss[1]

While she was successful in her mission, Vernestra Rwoh was conflicted about its outcome

With her mission successful, Rwoh brought the cell members to Republic space. Sometime after her mission, the Jedi Knight was present aboard the Republic Defense Coalition Star Cruiser Axiom where she spoke with Jedi Master Avar Kriss. Having heard about Rwoh's mission, Kriss mentally noted it was the kind of mission she did not let herself be assigned to because of how recognizable she was and then asked the Mirialan about it.[1]

Rwoh informed the Jedi Master that while the mission had been successful, one of the cell's members had been an informer that had been providing anti-scav droid codes in the Occlusion Zone, which meant that a new informer would need to be found. Rwoh noted that she was not sure if the outcome of the rescue was fortunate or not but told herself that it was not her duty to know, which she added did not sit well with her.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Vernestra Rwoh's rescue mission in Nihil space was mentioned in the 2024 novel The High Republic: Temptation of the Force, written by Tessa Gratton and published as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase III.[4]
