"I pay for speed and expertise. You can calibrate Caldorf VII and Regginis Mol interceptor missiles? I pay two hundred per missile mounted and calibrated. Do you wish the job?"
"Yes. Where and when? And what do we call you?"
"Call me Ranquiv. We leave at once."
―"Ranquiv" and Han Solo[2]

A Storm-hair assuming the name "Ranquiv" was the commander of a squadron of Chosen, the warriors of the Storm-hair warlord Nuso Esva and his realm. In 0 ABY, the warlord dispatched Ranquiv and his squadron to the planet Poln Minor, commanding the warriors to arm fifty Whisperlike fighters—which they hid in a cavern—with Caldorf VII interceptor missiles.

Ranquiv hired several beings, including the Rebels Leia Organa and Han Solo, to help his forces arm the starfighters. While they did so, Ranquiv's troops walked toward the Rebels, who feared that they would not be able to leave the cavern without the Chosen commander's permission, commandeering a Whisperlike to escape; however, Solo crashed the starfighter and stole a speeder bus Ranquiv was using to transport his workers to the cavern and escaped. Shortly after, the Storm-hairs launched their starfighters during a battle between Esva's Eastern Fleet and Ranquiv's Whisperlikes and the forces of Senior Captain Thrawn of the Galactic Empire. Solo destroyed the Storm-hair's starfighters with a Golan One space station's weaponry. Thrawn's forces destroyed the Eastern Fleet, forcing Esva to flee.

Biography[]

The Chosen's whispers[]

"An unusual person has been scouring the city for knowledgeable workers who will accept payment and not speak afterward of what they've seen."
―A Duros, on "Ranquiv"[2]

A Storm-hair[1] assuming the name of "Ranquiv" served the Storm-hair warlord Nuso Esva and his realm as a commander of the Chosen, Esva's elite warriors.[2] In 0 ABY,[3] the warlord dispatched a squadron of Chosen under Ranquiv's command to the Outer Rim Territories planet of Poln Minor—which was located in the Poln system, which also contained the planet Poln Major. He tasked the contingent with arming fifty Whisperlike fighters with Caldorf VII interceptor missiles as part of the Storm-hair's preparations for a battle against his nemesis, Senior Captain Thrawn of the Galactic Empire.[2]

Ranquiv and his forces hid their starfighters in a cavern, using a speeder bus as transport. The Storm-hair commander brought several workers, who promised not to speak of what they saw after their work arming Whisperlikes was finished, from Poln Minor's Dankcamp Village to the cavern. As another squadron of Chosen attempted to murder Governor Bidor Ferrouz, the Poln system's governor, the Chosen on Poln Minor armed the Whisperlikes.[2]

Death among the Chosen[]

"The frilty little bittern took them down. Every last frilting one of them."
"Then send in more. You said you would bring enough."
"Numbers aren't the problem. The problem is, no one else can get into the palace until our man inside comes out of wherever he's hiding."
―"Spikes" and "Ranquiv"[2]
Choices of One

"Ranquiv" discussed the Poln Major Chosen squadron's efforts on Poln Major (pictured).

At Poln Minor's Capperling's Cantina, a Duros criminal introduced Ranquiv to two Rebel Alliance operatives, Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa. Solo introduced himself and the princess as Shrike and Payne, respectively, as Solo did not want to tell Ranquiv their true names. Seeking to know if the pair could help him, Ranquiv asked them if they could calibrate Caldorf and Regginis Mol interceptor missiles, as any missile programmer would know that the model's construction had ceased twenty years ago. Organa remarked that the missiles' construction had ceased, satisfying Ranquiv, who invited the pair to his cavern. He offered them twenty hundred credits per missile mounted and calibrated.[2]

After the group arrived at the cave, Ranquiv, a thug known as "Spikes," and several Chosen discussed the Poln Major Chosen squadron's attempts on Ferrouz's life. The thug told Ranquiv that Emperor's Hand Mara Jade had destroyed most of the squadron and that no one could get into Ferrouz's palace until one of Esva's agents, Vestin Axlon, left the building. Solo interrupted the conversation and requested more bolts, which the Storm-hair commander provided.[2]

Going out with a bang[]

"Commander, I have ships at the explosion region. Looks like they're rising out from underground. Midsized fighters, alien design, with underslung— Commander, those underslung missiles are Caldorf VII interceptors."
―The Imperial II-class Star Destroyer Chimaera's sensor officer, to Commander Gilad Pellaeon, the Star Destroyer's commander[2]
Daric Allegiance

While he dealt with the Hand of Judgment (pictured), Vestin Axlon told Dors Stelikag to tell "Ranquiv" about Solo.

Shortly after, Ranquiv, several Chosen warriors, and two men walked to the Whisperlike the Rebels were working on. As the operatives feared that they could not leave the cave unless Ranquiv permitted them to do so, they commandeered the starfighter and moved to escape. As Ranquiv and his men approached the Whisperlike, Solo threw a hydrospanner at Ranquiv, who protected his face with his forearms. The Rebels then crashed their fighter and escaped aboard the Chosen commander's speeder bus. The Chosen attempted to track down the Rebels but ultimately failed. Shortly afterward, Axlon, who had captured the Hand of Judgment—a group of stormtrooper deserters of the Empire—told the thug Dors Stelikag that he should tell Ranquiv about Solo, whom Axlon believed would not be a problem.[2]

As the Hand of Judgment and Jade eliminated the Chosen squadron on Poln Major, a battle between Esva's Eastern Fleet and Ranquiv's Whisperlikes and Thrawn's Imperial forces erupted in the Poln system. The Storm-hair starfighters attempted to destroy the senior captain's[2] Imperial II-class Star Destroyer[4] Admonitor; however, Solo commandeered a Golan One space station and used its weaponry to destroy the Whisperlikes. Thrawn destroyed the rest of Esva's forces, and the warlord fled.[2]

Personality and traits[]

"Ranquiv's heading this way. He's got two armed men with him. "
"On a scale of one to ten, how unhappy do they look?"
"Very. There are two more men and two more of Ranquiv's yellow-eyed friends coming in about ten meters behind them."
―Leia Organa and Han Solo[2]

Ranquiv and his men were angry while chasing Organa and Solo, according to the former Rebel. A Storm-hair, the Chosen commander had skin that shimmered like a rainbow, and yellow,[2] multifaceted[1] eyes. Ranquiv's voice was as shimmery as his skin, with clipped edges to his words.[2]

Equipment[]

Ranquiv wore a hood.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Ranquiv appeared in the 2011 novel Choices of One, which was written by Timothy Zahn.[2]
