R-3X, also known as Rex, and formerly known as RX-24, was an RX-Series pilot droid who functioned as a pilot before being reprogrammed into a DJ on Batuu.

Biography[]

Pilot[]

RX-24 flew a Star Commuter 2000 from Lothal to Garel five years before the Battle of Yavin. On one occasion, the shuttle was used by the Spectres, a Rebel cell operating out of Lothal in their mission to steal arms from the Galactic Empire. Their plan involved separating Minister Maketh Tua from the Protocol droid accompanying her, C-3PO, so he could not translate her conversation with the Aqualish weapon designer, Amda Wabo. To accomplish this, two members of the rebel cell, the adolescent human Ezra Bridger and the astromech droid C1-10P staged a fight. Bridger demanded that RX-24 enforce a rule that would restrict all droids to the back of the transport. When Tua complained, RX-24 simply stated that he was following Imperial regulations.^[2]

The droid later went on to work for the Star Tours travel agency, where he piloted a Starspeeder 3000.^[3] At some point while working for Star Tours, Rex accidentally brought his StarSpeeder into a battle between the Imperial Navy and the Rebel Alliance. Though no one was hurt, the accident resulted in him being fired from the company. In the time after, Rex became a cargo pilot for the Alliance and claimed to have been present during the Battle of Jakku.^[6]

Life on Batuu[]

At some point after the battle of Jakku, Rex crash landed on Batuu, where he was found and reprogrammed into a DJ by the Utai, Mubo at the Droid Depot. In addition to his new programming, RX-24 received a new name, R-3X, and his appearance was altered. Thereafter, Mubo gave the droid to Oga Garra to pay off a debt, and "DJ Rex" started providing the musical entertainment inside Oga's Cantina. ^[5] Rex would play a variety of music in his role as DJ, from Oola Shuka, by galactic superstar Gaya, to Bright Suns, by Mus Kat & Nalpak. Rex himself was featured as a performer in such songs as Blue Milk Surprise by the Loth-cats, as well as Mad About Mad About Me by Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes. Rex would frequently break down mid-performance and need to be rebooted by Oga's bartending staff. ^[4]

As a pilot for Garel Interstellar Excursions, Rex was professional but fairly laid back. He was not necessarily a stickler for the rule that droids could only stand behind the passenger area, he had the authority to enforce it and would do so if there was a complaint, cooly citing Imperial regulations. ^[2] By the time he was settled on Batuu he was far more expressive and outgoing, befitting his new position as cantina DJ. ^[4]

Behind the scenes[]

RX-24 was originally a character (nicknamed Captain "Rex") from Star Tours, a simulator ride at several Disney Parks worldwide (first opened at Disneyland in 1987), where he was voiced by Paul Reubens, who reprised the role in the Star Wars Rebels episode "Droids in Distress."^[2] Reubens voiced the droid again for his appearance in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios,^[7] where RX-24 is a DJ at Oga's Cantina and now goes by the name R-3X.^[4]
