"Keep firing! I've called for assistance from Ab Dalis, and they'll send what they can. We just need to hold on."
―Odabba, to his bridge crew as their convoy is attacked by the Nihil[2]

Odabba was a Shistavanen who was the captain of the freighter Arbitrage for Garello Technologies on the planet Ab Dalis during the High Republic Era. In 232 BBY, after Ab Dalis was struck by one of the Emergences of the Great Hyperspace Disaster, the company's chief executive, Larence Garello, ordered his workforce and their families to evacuate on a convoy of freighters, with Odabba commanding the Arbitrage at the lead. As the convoy departed Ab Dalis, however, they were attacked by the Nihil marauders, who destroyed two of the vessels before boarding the Arbitrage. Odabba attempted to arm the bridge crew with weapons to defend themselves, but the Nihil breached the bridge and released poison gas, killing the crew of the Arbitrage before they plundered the ships of the convoy.

Biography[]

"We're being boarded. I'll open the weapons locker. We don't have enough blasters for everyone. Anyone with military experience gets priority. Everyone else…find something to fight with."
―Odabba[2]

During the High Republic Era, the Shistavanen Odabba served as the captain of the freighter Arbitrage for Garello Technologies, a midlevel materials research and manufacturing company led by chief executive Larence Garello that was based in the Keftia district of the Outer Rim planet Ab Dalis.[2] By 232 BBY,[1] Odabba had worked for Garello Technologies for over a decade.[2] That year,[1] the destruction of the freighter Legacy Run in hyperspace, orchestrated by Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro of the Nihil marauders, led to the Great Hyperspace Disaster and the subsequent Emergences, in which fragments of the starship emerged across the Outer Rim Territories. The first Emergence occurred in the Ab Dalis system, with one such fragment striking Ab Dalis, devastating the planet and killing around twenty million of its inhabitants. Garello and his workforce, including Odabba, survived the impact, and the chief executive ordered a temporary evacuation.[2]

Odabba's Arbitrage and the rest of the Garello convoy were attacked by the Nihil marauders (symbol depicted).

The Arbitrage, with Odabba in command on the bridge and Garello himself aboard, led a convoy of six freighters that carried the company's entire workforce and their families, as well as its assets, away from Ab Dalis. The effort to load the convoy took an entire day and night, after which the Arbitrage and the other vessels headed to the star system's outer edge so that they could wait to determine how the situation would develop. However, before they could reach their destination, the convoy encountered a swirling storm cloud in space; Odabba scanned the cloud, but received no information. The Shistavanen ordered the convoy to divert around the cloud, which was soon revealed to be the arrival of the Nihil, who attacked the convoy.[2]

Odabba ordered the convoy to prepare for battle, raising shields and opening fire; however, their weapons were ineffective and panic had begun to spread as the identity of their assailants became evident. The Shistavanen commanded the convoy to flee back to Ab Dalis as the Nihil disabled and destroyed the freighter Maree's Diligence. Odabba, having attempted to call for assistance from the planet, told his bridge crew to continue firing upon the marauders, who destroyed a second freighter. Shortly afterward, the Nihil began to board the Arbitrage, and Odabba attempted to arm his crew to defend themselves. Before the Shistavanen could open the weapons locker for his crew, the Nihil breached the bridge and filled it with poison gas. The gas killed everyone on the bridge, including Odabba, and the Nihil subsequently eliminated the rest of the Garello Technologies convoy and plundered its ships.[2]

Personality and traits[]

Odabba was a Shistavanen with dark fur. Having worked for Garello for a number of years, the chief executive considered him reliable. Upon encountering the cloud from which the Nihil would soon emerge, Odabba preferred to be safe rather than risk danger. He knew that ordering the convoy to run from the Nihil was a futile endeavor, but hoped that some of the ships could reach safety. Odabba tried to reassure his crew with hollow words that Ab Dalis would send assistance, despite the fact that the planet's situation made it unlikely. The Shistavanen was grim when the Nihil boarded the Arbitrage, but he still intended to fight, stating that those with military experience had priority to the freighter's limited weaponry complement.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Odabba appeared in the novel Light of the Jedi, written by Charles Soule and released in 2021[2] as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's Phase I.[3]
