"No nuts. No fruits. Not even a single mushbloom. It's considered bad luck or something."
―Smuggler Han Solo to Jaxxon T. Tumperakki inside of one of Jaxxon's nightmares[2]

Mushbloom was a fungus native to the Mid Rim Territories forest planet Kashyyyk. In 14 BBY, Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis collected a mushbloom seed to plant in his crew member Greez Dritus' terrarium aboard their luxury yacht, Stinger Mantis. The Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs created a pie using the fungus, which he published the recipe for in his holiday cookbook, The Life Day Cookbook.

Description[]

Native to[1] the Mid Rim Territories[3] forest planet Kashyyyk, the mushbloom was a fungus that grew within and around the mountains that encased the sacred Origin Tree. The fungi had a brown stem with a bulbous, bioluminescent, fruiting body. The Wookiee species considered it a delicacy,[1] as it was a good source of nutrition for them.[3] In its mature state, the fruiting body was yellowish-green in color. The fungi had to be picked before the fruiting body had fully matured or else they became highly poisonous. Poisoning from the fungus was rare but often fatal.[1]

History[]

"My savory mushbloom pie also makes a great Life Day meal for those species who tend to be a bit more herbivorous than your average Wookiee."
―Strono Tuggs, The Life Day Cookbook[4]

Cal-Kestis

Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis collected a mushbloom seed from the mountains near the Origin Tree.

In 14 BBY,[5] during the crew of the luxury yacht Stinger Mantis's mission to rebuild the Jedi Order, crew member and Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis collected a mushbloom seed from the mountains near the Origin Tree. Kestis planted the seed in his companion Greez Dritus' terrarium aboard the Mantis, one of several seeds that Kestis had collected in order to repay Dritus for his assistance during the Mantis crew's mission.[1]

Sometime between 4 ABY and 5 ABY,[6] Lepi smuggler Jaxxon T. Tumperakki had a recurring nightmare in which fellow smuggler Han Solo explained to Jaxxon that during the Wookiee Festival of Bounty, mushblooms could not be transported from Kashyyyk, as it was considered bad luck.[2]

At some point, the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs created the mushbloom pie, which was better suited for less carnivorous species than the Wookiees. He published his recipe for the pie in his holiday cookbook, The Life Day Cookbook, released after the publication of his first cookbook[4] in 34 ABY.[7]

Mushblooms were listed among a number of other nutritious Wookiee foodstuffs in The Secrets of the Wookiees, a book about Wookiees written by the protocol droid C-3PO and published sometime after 35 ABY. The book included an illustration of the fungus, and the content of the book was a compilation of information described to C-3PO by his Wookiee friend Chewbacca.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Mushblooms first appeared in the 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, developed by Respawn Entertainment.[1]

  7. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook establishes that the in-universe book was published at the same time as when the First Order was searching for the Resistance base on Batuu, which Star Wars: Timelines dates to 34 ABY.
