- "Get those mortars up here!"
- ―Captain Rex, during the Battle of Umbara
A mortar was an indirect fire weapon that hurled explosive projectiles in a high arc. Certain models, such as those used by the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars, were portable enough to be carried by one clone trooper.[1] Others were more suitable to be mounted on vehicles, such as those on some Imperial All Terrain Scout Transports.[4]

A clone trooper carrying a mortar launcher
During the Clone Wars, the 501st Legion was equipped with several mortars. During the Battle of Umbara, the 501st used them against the clone troopers from Waxer's platoon of the 212th Battalion, whom Jedi General Pong Krell had claimed were Umbarans disguised as clones.[1]
During the Galactic Civil War, the modular design of the Empire's All Terrain Scout Transport allowed for ease in customizing armaments and tools for specific mission parameters. Mortar launchers were one such weapon that could be attached to the command pod of the AT-ST.[4]

An artillery stormtrooper prepares their mortar
Artillery stormtroopers were a specialized class of stormtrooper who wielded mortars and other indirect fire weaponry as part of the Imperial Army during the Imperial Era.[5] Following the Galactic Civil War, one artillery stormtrooper, who still had access to mortar weaponry as part of an Imperial remnant, served Moff Gideon and his remnant efforts. Operating a model 201 mortar system, that stormtrooper took part in a skirmish on Tython during Gideon's hunt for Grogu.[3]
