Mairan, also referred to as mind flayers, or as Bors, were a sentient multi-tentacled multipod species that were native to Maires. They had the unique ability to read minds, and as a result, they were often used as a form of torture by the Galactic Empire and the Partisans.

Biology and appearance[]

Mairan, sometimes known as Bors,[5] were a sentient[1] multi-tentacled multipod species hailing from Maires.[5] They were unique for being able to read minds and erase, or alter, memories.[2] It was known for some individuals, such as the Imperial shuttle pilot Bodhi Rook, to lose their minds after having their mind plundered by a Mairan.[3]

Saw Gerrera's Partisans kept a Mairan named Bor Gullet.[3] During the Galactic Civil War, the Galactic Empire kept three Mairans in ice, occasionally defrosting them to interrogate prisoners,[6] with Bor Ifriem being used to interrogate Chelli Aphra in Accresker Jail.[2] Decades later, Harra the Hutt kept a Mairan at her stronghold on Vodran. At one point it was used on Cost Niktur.[4]

Behind the scenes[]

Mairan first appeared in the Gareth Edwards' 2016 anthology film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.[3] Although the canon novel Join the Resistance: Escape from Vodran, written by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker, identified them as Bors,[4] Doctor Aphra (2016) 21, a canon comic written by Simon Spurrier and penciled by Kev Walker, identified the Mairans for the first time.[6] In Star Wars legends, the Mairan first appeared in the novel Young Jedi Knights: Lightsabers, written by Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta.[7]
