The L-s7.2 laser cannon was a laser cannon that was equipped on TIE fighters.[1] It was an improved design over the earlier L-s1 laser cannon that offered a lower recycle time and faster rate of fire.[1]
Description[]
The Ls7.2 laser cannon was a tibanna gas-powered starfighter weapon designed by Sienar Fleet Systems to be installed and used by fighters of the Imperial TIE fighter series. It was conceived as an improvement upon the earlier standard model of L-s1 laser cannon used in Tie line craft before the Battle of Endor which was prone to overheating and slowing down the craft while it was firing due to drawing power directly from their twin ion engines. To overcome these flaws, Ls7.2 cannons used a separate power generator which also allowed for lower recycle time and higher rates of fire.[1]
Ls7.2 cannons used an embedded fire control computer connected directly to the laser power converter as well as a gas injector control relay next to the impulse chamber to carefully regulate the power and fire rate of the plasma bolts. A power line from the fighters' on board solar ionization reactor was connected to the laser reactor unit, generating power which charged the prismatic crystals behind the galvenning barrel and formed the plasma bolt. With the press of a button, the bolt was shot through a final stage collimator focuser which gave it an arrow-like shape. Expensive, SFS-owned tibanna gas gave the shots a distinct green color and allowed the pilots to track them in the midst of battle.[1]
