"From what I've heard, the Alderaanians used to throw quite a feast every year, with a roast kulkan as the centerpiece. They didn't skimp on the fixins neither, boilin' up a variety of veg—includin' kebroot tubers—to complement the main course."
―Strono Tuggs, The Life Day Cookbook[1]

The kebroot was a type of tuberous vegetable. For the Alderaanian Winter's Heart festival, the tuber was traditionally served as part of the main course in a feast. The Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs included kebroot in his Kebroot Parcel recipe.

Description[]

A kebroot was a type of tuberous vegetable that was edible by Artiodacs and humans.[1]

History[]

"It would have been Winter's Heart, you know. If Alderaan were still there. We'd be getting ready for the banquet right about now, peeling kebroot tubers for the pot."
―Max, to Rel[2]

Prior to[1] the planet[3] Alderaan's destruction[1] in 0 BBY,[4] the human natives of the world included kebroot in the main course of a feast celebrating the Winter's Heart festival. When preparing the course, kebroot was peeled into a pot and then[2] boiled. It was served alongside other vegetables and a roast kulkan.[1]

Alderaanians Max and Rel (pictured) reminisced over peeling kebroot tubers after the destruction of their homeworld.

In 0 ABY or later,[5] while enlisted with the Rebel Alliance, the Alderaanian Rel was working as a scout during a battle against the Galactic Empire on the Outer Rim moon Shard when he ran into his childhood friend, Max, who was on the opposing side as a cold weather assault stormtrooper. The pair called a truce and imagined how, if Alderaan had not been destroyed, they would have been peeling kebroot into a pot in preparation for a Winter's Heart banquet.[2]

The Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs used kebroot to make Kebroot Parcels, which he included as a recipe for his second cookbook, The Life Day Cookbook, at some point after the publishing of his first cookbook[1] in 34 ABY.[6] The Artiodac considered the parcels to be mouthwatering and hoped that they captured some of the flavor of Winter's Heart for those who had survived the destruction of Alderaan and still remembered the festival or sought culinary comfort around that time of year.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

In the current Star Wars canon, kebroot was mentioned in "The Song of Winter's Heart," a short story written by Cavan Scott and George Mann for the Life Day Treasury anthology, which was published on September 7, 2021. Prior to the book's release, kebroot was first mentioned in a preview for the short story in a StarWars.com article published on September 3 of the same year.[7]

Kebroot in Star Wars: Tiny Death Star

Kebroot is mentioned in a recipe for Kebroot Parcels in the 2021 Star Wars: The Life Day Cookbook, a recipe book written by Jenn Fujikawa and Marc Sumerak. In the out-of-universe recipe, sweet potatoes are the tuber used in place of kebroot.[1] Kebroot originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it first appeared in the 1997 middle-grade novel Delusions of Grandeur, which was written by Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta as the ninth installment of the Star Wars: Young Jedi Knights series.[8] The tuber was first visually depicted in[9] the 2013 non-canon mobile game[10] Star Wars: Tiny Death Star.[9]
