The hinged double-bladed lightsaber was a double-bladed lightsaber variant that featured a hinge in the center of the hilt. It folded for easier storage and one or both blades could be activated while the weapon was collapsed, the parallel blades being able to trap the blade of another lightsaber. Some Jedi Temple Guards carried this style of lightsaber, as did Jedi Wayseeker Orla Jareni and Jedi General Pong Krell, the latter of which having owned two of them.

Description[]

5s questions Krell

Pong Krell ignites one of the blades in his hinged saber while it is still in its locked position.

Hinged double-bladed lightsabers were effectively two single-blade lightsabers joined by a hinge at their pommels. This allowed for greater portability while being carried on a user's belt. Wielders could activate one[3] or both blades while the weapon was still folded, with the parallel blades able to trap the blade of another lightsaber.[6]

History[]

Hinged double-bladed lightsabers had a history with the Jedi Order. Some members of the Jedi Temple Guard wielded these variations,[7] in addition to their yellow-bladed lightsaber pikes which were also identical in design.[8] During the High Republic Era, Umbaran Jedi Wayseeker Orla Jareni owned a white hinged double-bladed lightsaber.[9]

During the Clone Wars, Jedi General Pong Krell's four-armed Besalisk anatomy allowed him to wield two hinged double-bladed lightsabers, one with blue blades, and the other with green blades.[3]

In 3 BBY,[10] while venturing into the Lothal Jedi Temple, Kanan Jarrus experienced a Force vision that featured several Jedi Temple Guards—including the Grand Inquisitor—wielding such weapons.[7]

In 35 ABY,[11] while searching for the wayfinder on Kef Bir, Rey fought a vision of herself as a Sith. In the vision, her dark-side counterpart wielded a hinged double-bladed lightsaber with unstable red blades.[6]

Behind the scenes[]

"Pong Krell['s] lightsaber design introduces something new to the Jedi arsenal. Though double-ended lightsabers had been seen before—most famously wielded by Darth Maul—Krell's are hinged, allowing him to more easily stow them on his belt."

  9. According to StarWars Star Wars Rebels Returns...with Princess Leia on StarWars.com (backup link), "A Princess on Lothal" is "set roughly three years before the events of A New Hope." Since Star Wars: Galactic Atlas dates A New Hope to 0 BBY, "A Princess on Lothal" must take place in 3 BBY. Because Dawn of Rebellion states that "The Mystery of Chopper Base" occurs three years before the Battle of Yavin, it takes place in 3 BBY. Since "Shroud of Darkness" is between these two episodes, its events, which include the vision of the hinged lightsaber, must also be set in 3 BBY.
  10. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary states that the events of Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker occur thirty-five years after the Battle of Yavin. As Star Wars: Galactic Atlas dates the Battle of Yavin to 0 BBY, The Rise of Skywalker, which includes the vision of the hinged lightsaber, must occur in 35 ABY.
