- "A sparsely inhabited planet in the neighboring Handooine system has become a Republic staging area for a military engagement likely to start within the standard month."
- ―HoloNet News Core Edition report
Handooine was an Outer Rim Territories planet located on the Triellus Trade Route as part of the Phelleem sector. Known as Gwynhes during the reign of the conqueror Xim twenty millennia before the Battle of Yavin, by the time of the Clone Wars, Handooine was a sparsely populated world. During that conflict, the Galactic Republic used Handooine as a staging area for its upcoming military campaign on the nearby planet Jabiim. Separatist agents also introduced a computer virus onto the Republic's prototype Tector-class Star Destroyer Gibbon at Handooine at some point during the war.
Description[]
- "They make noises about peaceful resolutions, but only once their army is amassed a short hyperspace jump away."
- ―Jabiimi Spokesbeing Alto Stratus on the Galactic Republic
Handooine was a terrestrial planet with gray-and-blue-colored skies that was located in the Handooine system,[3] a part of the Phelleem sector[2] in the Slice portion of[1] the Outer Rim Territories.[2] It was situated on the super-hyperroute known as the Triellus Trade Route, which connected it to the Jabiim and Trasemene systems as well as the Sy Myrth system[4] of the Jospro sector.[6] In particular, Handooine was located only a short hyperspace jump away from the planet Jabiim.[3]

During the reign of Xim, Handooine was known as Gwynhes.
Between 25,120 BBY and 25,096 BBY, Handooine was known as Gwynhes and was situated in the Kiirium Reaches region, a part of the empire of the Tionese conqueror Xim. During that time, Xim moved his forces from the Kveror system to Gwynhes, and additionally the Tionese military advanced through Gwynhes on its way from the Far Barseg system—which would later be known as the Sy Myrth system—to the Gwynhes Minor system—the later Jabiim system.[1]
By the time of the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Handooine was a sparsely populated world. Before its planned campaign on the planet Jabiim, the Republic used Handooine as a staging area for its military forces. Hundreds of All Terrain Armored Transport, All Terrain Tactical Enforcer, and All Terrain Experimental Transport walkers were being carefully prepared and maintained for rapid deployment from there to Jabiim at a moment's notice.[3]
In addition, multiple Republic gunships and numerous clone troopers were also present on the planet, with the arrival of[3] the Acclamator-class assault ship[7] Dominance and its troops bringing the number of soldiers on Handooine up to an entire corps. At one point, a HoloNet News Core Edition report on the situation on Handooine and Jabiim was transmitted from the former planet's[3] capital city, Jelwick.[5] The news report estimated that it was likely the invasion of Jabiim would occur within a standard month,[3] and the operation indeed began in 22 BBY.[8]
The prototype Tector-class Star Destroyer Gibbon was one of a handful of such vessels assigned during the Clone Wars to Republic live-fire exercises before their formal production had commenced. When the Gibbon was stationed at Handooine, Separatist agents introduced a computer virus aboard the warship. The virus replicated itself throughout Admiral Kreuge's task force, contributing to a Republic defeat at the subsequent Battle of Salvara.[9] By 20 BBY, Handooine was undecided on its affiliation to either the Republic or the Confederacy.[10]
Behind the scenes[]
Handooine was first mentioned in "Republic HoloNet News Core Edition 14:7:02," an article written by Pablo Hidalgo as an in-universe news report. It was published in the sixty-eighth issue of the Star Wars Insider magazine[3] on May 12, 2003.[11] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the Handooine system, and therefore the planet itself, in grid square S-7.[1]
