"Our intel said the power grid wasn't defended, that there were two unarmed droids at each control station. But there were dozens of battle droids with blasters. B1s, B2s, commanders, grenadiers. They surprised us."
Iskat Akaris[2]

Grenade droids[2] were a type of B1-series battle droid[1] in the Separatist Droid Army.[2] In 22 BBY,[3] a number of grenadiers served as part of the droid unit assigned to defend the Separatist droid factory on Thule.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Grenade droids made their canon debut within the novel Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade by Delilah S. Dawson but had made prior appearances in Star Wars Legends. Dawson discovered the Legends incarnation of the grenadiers via Wookieepedia when researching if such a droid unit existed and decided to incorporate them into her novel. When asked by a fan if the grenade droids seen in her novel were a variant of the B1-series, she confirmed they were a canonization of the Legends B1 grenadier class.[1]

If it survived edits without getting cut, then I have to assume that's the one!" (backup link) (In response to: "Afternoon Miss Dawson! I have a really quick question about Rise, loving it as I go through it, and as a battle droid enthusiast I just need to keep track of units in my head :P. […] The Grenade droids are a type of B1, right? Like how the command units mentioned are B1 Command droids (yellow B1s) […] Prior depictions of Grenade Droids have depicted them as a B1 variant, just want to confirm that's what you were going for […] Basically, asking if I assumed right and your intention was the grenade droid mentioned was one of the B1s they fight)

  3. According to Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade, the Mission to Thule takes place concurrent to Obi-Wan and Anakin's mission to Cato Neimoidia. The latter is established by Brotherhood to take place between the beginning of the Clone Wars and the Battle of Christophsis, both of which are dated to 22 BBY by Star Wars: Galactic Atlas. Therefore, both missions and the Thule factory's destruction must take place that year.
