So, a frequent topic of discussion in Discord is the way that we name and link to articles of comic books, mostly the Marvel ones, where there's multiple series with the same title. The most egregious offender is Star Wars: Doctor Aphra (2016) and Star Wars: Doctor Aphra (2020); right now, we typically link to issues like Doctor Aphra (2016) 1 with a pipelink that *excludes* the year, which means that Aphra's appearances section includes multiple entries with the exact same title—i.e. Doctor Aphra 10 and Doctor Aphra 10 for the 2016 and 2020 issues. I think we can all agree that this is not all user- or reader-friendly, and we've also acknowledged that Marvel tends to consider the year parenthetical to be part of the series' title. As a result, I'd like to propose the following:
Replace the following in Wookieepedia:Naming policy#Comics and magazines's Disambiguation section:
- If multiple comic-book issue articles compete for the same title, neither shall take naming precedence. Instead, each article shall disambiguate via a parenthetical descriptor indicating the respective issue's publication year, and a disambiguation page shall be created at the root title (example: Star Wars (1977) 1, Star Wars (2015) 1, and Star Wars (2020) 1, with the disambiguation page at Star Wars 1).
with:
- When two or more comic series share the same title, but began publication in different years, the year of each of the series' initial publication should be considered part of the series title, and included in a parenthetical descriptor (example: Star Wars: Doctor Aphra (2016) and Star Wars: Doctor Aphra (2020)).
- The preceding rule also applies to individual issues of the series, and should be applied to all issues of the series, regardless of whether there is a competing issue title. A disambiguation page should be created at the root title (example: Doctor Aphra (2016) 12 and Doctor Aphra (2020) 12, with a disambiguation page at Doctor Aphra 12).
Add the following to Wookieepedia:Manual of Style#Comic books
- When linking to issues of comic book series that include the series' initial publication year as a parenthetical descriptor in the article title, the year parenthetical should be included in the pipelink, in the following format: Doctor Aphra (2020) 12. This applies even in reference notes and Appearances lists where a subject only appears in one of the series and not the other.
I will note that this will result in us needing to move all issues of the Doctor Aphra (2016) series to include (2016) in the title, even if there's not a 2020 issue announced with that number yet. However, I think it's more accurate and useful, and it means we'll stop doing it piecemeal issue-by-issue every month when they solicit the next issue. The same will apply to the Star Wars (Marvel 1977) series, like Star Wars 108; the article title without the parenthetical should remain a redirect to the issue.
