Duja's brooch was created by Duja, a human woman who served as a handmaiden of Senator Padmé Amidala. The gold-and-red pin was purposefully designed to appear amateurishly-handmade like a child's gift to their mother, but in reality, it served as a beckon call for her transport ship, the Possibility.

In 19 BBY, Duja brought her brooch to the Outer Rim planet Batuu while investigating Separatist activities. Her fact-finding inquiries resulted in Separatist Duke Solha ordering Duja's assassination to prevent her from uncovering more evidence, and the woman's body was left in a coffin outside a bar with her brooch still on her chest. After arriving on Batuu, Amidala acquired the pin and used it to call the Possibility to her.

Description[]

Duja's brooch was a wearable brooch crafted by Duja, a human woman who had served as a handmaiden of Senator Padmé Amidala[1] at some point between 32 BBY and 19 BBY.[3] The jewelry pin was fashioned out of modified plastoid and designed to aesthetically appear as an amateurishly-made child's gift to their mother.[1] The gold-and-red device was roughly oval in shape and bore an inscription reading "mom" in the Aurebesh language.[2] Duja's brooch also served as a beckon call for her ship, the Nomad Four transport Possibility, and could be activated by squeezing hard in its center[1] to pop open its top.[2]

History[]

At some point, Duja created a brooch to use as a beckon call for the Possibility. She and Amidala discussed its sentimental value, including that it was made to symbolize the former's future hopes to settle down and have a child who might make a similarly fashioned gift. For several years, Duja wore her brooch often despite multiple individuals telling her it was unfashionable to don.[1]

In 19 BBY,[4] Duja traveled to the Outer Rim planet Batuu in the Possibility while investigating Separatist activities during the galaxy-wide Clone Wars between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic. After landing her ship on the world, she brought her brooch with her while she went on a fact-finding excursion in the nearby Black Spire Outpost settlement. While investigating, Duja uncovered evidence of a Separatist droid factory secretly operating on the planet Mokivj. She returned to the Possibility and recorded a message for Amidala, asking her former employer to come and investigate on Batuu with her.[1]

DujasBroochCalling

Padmé Amidala used Duja's brooch to call the Possibility to her.

Afterward, Duja again left her ship behind in a hiding spot, taking her brooch with her to use as a beckon call for it when she returned. Around this time, the Mokivj factory's operator, Duke Solha, discovered that she had learned of his operations and ordered her assassination. Shortly after, Duja was killed on his orders, and her corpse, with her brooch still pinned to her chest, was left at a local bar. Days later, Amidala arrived on Batuu and visited the bar, seeing the woman's body lying in a coffin out front. Eventually, after singing a funerary song for her former handmaiden, Amidala took Duja's brooch from her corpse. Afterward, the senator used the pin as a beckon call, and the Possibility autopiloted itself to her location.[1] Inside the vessel, Amidala watched a holographic message recorded by her late handmaiden in which Duja was wearing the brooch.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Duja's brooch first appeared in the second storyline of the 2018 novel Thrawn: Alliances, the second installment in the Star Wars: Thrawn novel series written by Timothy Zahn.[1] The brooch was first pictured in the first issue of Star Wars: Thrawn: Alliances, a 2024 comic miniseries adapting the book's events. The issue was written by Timothy Zahn and Jody Houser, illustrated by Pat Olliffe and Andrea Di Vito, and released by Marvel Comics[2] on January 24, 2024.[5]
