"Here's your chance to beat up some helpless opponents. It's not that much of a contest."
Commander Wex Dafid briefs recruits before recreating Dev's mission[2]

Dev was a starfighter pilot in the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Galactic Civil War. During an early training mission in a T-65 X-wing starfighter, Dev accidentally entered hyperspace and emerged in an Imperial training ground. Mistaking Imperial craft for exercise targets, he wiped them out before his astromech notified him he was in Imperial space, and he returned to the Alliance forces.

Biography[]

Dev joined the Alliance to Restore the Republic at some point prior to Operation Strike Fear, a major offensive launched against the Alliance by the Galactic Empire[1] in 1 BBY.[3] Entering the Alliance Starfighter Corps, he began training as a starfighter pilot. Before beginning combat training, pilots were required to display their basic flight skills by completing the pilot proving grounds, commonly referred to as "The Maze," a series of platforms containing gates that needed to be passed through in sequence. On his first run through the course, Dev easily passed the first six gates, but as he banked his T-65 X-wing starfighter toward the next gate, the rookie accidentally made the jump through hyperspace to the Senex system, emerging in an Imperial training ground.[1]

Dev's sidestep was recreated as a training simulation.

Thinking that the Imperial ships were part of the course, Dev opened fire on the stationary Imperial TIE fighters and Class-A cargo containers, as well as a Delta-class DX-9 stormtrooper transport and the BFF-1 bulk freighter Rouh. With his concentration on destroying the enemy targets, it took Dev some time to notice the message from his R2-series astromech droid warning that he was in Imperial space and should return to the proving ground. Though surprised and discomposed by the experience, Dev was able to return safely to the Alliance forces.[1]

The story of how Dev turned his mistake into a success became somewhat famous among Alliance pilots. The event was later recreated as a training simulation, with rookie pilots challenged to destroy all craft at the Imperial training ground within fifteen minutes.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Dev was an able pilot, capable of destroying several Imperial targets before undergoing combat training. However, during his early training, he displayed a lack of familiarity with the systems of his fighter, accidentally entering hyperspace and failing to notice a warning from his astromech droid.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Dev was created for the 1993 LucasArts video game Star Wars: X-Wing. Although he does not appear in the game itself, he is mentioned in the briefing for the game's first X-wing training mission, "Dev's Sidestep," a recreation of his famous training run.[1]
