The Codian Moon was a moss-covered moon located in the Mid Rim's freestanding subsectors. Featuring grasslands and plains of wood-moss turf, the Codian Moon was the site of several ranches used for breeding reeks, herbivorous mammals native to the planet Ylesia.

Several ranchers of the Codian Moon began breeding and selling their reeks for use in gladiatorial arenas by 24 BBY. During the Clone Wars, the moon was not affiliated with either the Galactic Republic or the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

Description[]

The Codian Moon was a terrestrial moon[4] located in the Codia system,[1] a part of the freestanding subsectors of[2] the Mid Rim.[1] The moon was covered by moss,[7] with its terrain features including mossy grasslands[5] and rolling plains of wood-moss turf.[4]

History[]

Reek SWCT

Reeks were bred on the Codian Moon.

While reeks on the Codian Moon were originally bred[5] for meat[8] and as pack animals,[5] unscrupulous ranchers,[6] as well as members of the Geonosian species[7] that was native to the Outer Rim Territories planet Geonosis,[5] eventually discovered that[6] a diet that included meat, coupled with periodic starving, heightened the reeks' aggression[5] and introduced carnivorous[6] instincts in the creatures.[5] Facing plummeting profits and the diminishing of resources on the Codian Moon,[5] at some point by 24 BBY,[9] several of the moon's ranchers began breeding[5] and selling[6] their reeks for use in gladiatorial arenas[5]—including[6] the Petranaki arena on Geonosis,[10] where a reek from the Codian Moon[11] had served for years[8] by 22 BBY.[9]

By 20 BBY, the Codian Moon remained undecided on its affiliation to one of the opposing factions of the Clone Wars, the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[12] The population of the Codia system numbered less than one million around 25 ABY.[3] At some point no earlier than 36 ABY, the Codian Moon was mentioned in a guide to various species of the galaxy that was based on the research notes of sentientologist Mammon Hoole.[5]

Locations[]

The Codian Moon was known for[4] the several ranches where reeks—large, quadrupedal, herbivorous mammals native to the Hutt Space world Ylesia—were often bred[5] after many herds of the creatures had been transplanted from the latter location.[8] Due to the resources,[6] including wood-moss,[8] being scarcer on the Codian Moon than on Ylesia,[6] the small herds of reeks on the moon[13] displayed even greater territoriality[6] over their chosen patches of wood-moss turf.[13]

The Codian Moon was introduced in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones: The Visual Dictionary.

The Codian Moon was first mentioned in the 2002 reference book Star Wars: Attack of the Clones: The Visual Dictionary, which was authored by David West Reynolds.[14] The moon's name was also spelled as "Codian moon" on one instance in the StarWars.com Databank entry for the reek.[6]

The 2006 book The New Essential Guide to Alien Species claimed that the Codian Moon was a natural satellite of Ylesia.[5] Such placement directly contradicted the 1997 novel The Paradise Snare, which explicitly notes that Ylesia had no moons,[15] and also conflicted with prior sources placing the moon in the trailing direction from both the world Cerea[12][16][17] and Ylesia in Hutt Space, on the opposite side of the galaxy.[12][18]

The information from The New Essential Guide to Alien Species was definitively overridden by the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas, which placed the Codia system in grid square H-15, trailing from the Cerean system,[3]—a placement that is in line with the information from the pre-2006 sources[12][16][17] and was also repeated by later sources.[1][2][19]

Furthermore, Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 22 BBY, depicts a reek being used in the Petranaki arena on Geonosis in such a way, and The Official Star Wars Fact File Part 73 (GEO22, Geonosis) confirms that specific creature's origin on the Codian Moon. Finally, The Official Star Wars Fact File 104 (GEO11, Geonosis Arena Beasts) establishes that that reek had served in that capacity on Geonosis for several years, meaning that the breeding of reeks for combat purposes must have begun by 24 BBY.
