- Leida Mothma: "You're drinking squigs?"
- Mon Mothma: "No, I've lost my taste for it."
- Leida Mothma: "It's disgusting."
- Tay Kolma: "That's the point."
- ―Leida Mothma, Mon Mothma, and Tay Kolma[2]
Chandrilan Squigs were a Chandrilan cocktail from the Core Worlds planet Chandrila. In 230 BBY, Jedi Padawan Amadeo Azzazzo walked past a restaurant on the Core Worlds planet Coruscant serving the beverages and the squig eels that went in them. During the Imperial Era, in 5 BBY, Chandrilan Squigs were imbibed by Senator Mon Mothma, her husband Perrin Fertha, and their old school friend Tay Kolma while in the Chandrilan Embassy on Coruscant.
Description[]
Chandrilan Squigs[3] were a type of Chandrilan cocktail from[1] the Core Worlds planet[4] Chandrila.[1] The beverage was clear in color until the addition of squigs—Chandrilan eels—[3] which caused the drink to fizz and take on a yellow hue. Chandrilan Squigs were potable to humans.[2]
History[]
During the High Republic Era, a restaurant on[1] the Core Worlds planet[4] Coruscant served the cocktails.[1] In 230 BBY,[5] Jedi Padawan Amadeo Azzazzo walked past the restaurant, taking care to avoid the workers outside the establishment offering Chandrilan Squigs to passersby.[1]
By the time of the Imperial Era, the Chandrilan Senator Mon Mothma and her daughter—Leida Mothma—disliked the drink, while her husband—Perrin Fertha—enjoyed it. At the couple's party in the Chandrilan Embassy on Coruscant[2] in 5 BBY,[6] Chandrilan Squigs were served. Both Mothma, Fertha, and their old school friend Tay Kolma drank the beverage, although Mothma chose not to have the worm-like creatures in her drink. When Leida commented to her mother about the drinks being disgusting, Kolma responded that that was the point.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- "Chandrila has a rich history, full of heritage and judicious customs. Even their food and drinks come from a long tradition, and this fizzy delight is the perfect beverage to toast to any celebratory occasion—just ask Mon Mothma."
- ―Jenn Fujikawa, about Chandrilan Squigs
Chandrilan Squigs first appeared in "Narkina 5," the eighth episode of the first season of the Disney+ television series Andor,[2] released on October 26, 2022.[7] Referred to only as squigs in the episode,[2] the beverage was fully identified in a StarWars.com article on the drink itself authored by Jenn Fujikawa and published two days after the episode. The article provided an out-of-universe recipe for the Chandrilan Squigs that mixed mango juice, lemon-lime soda, and ice, with the squigs being made using raspberry gelatin powder, unflavored gelatin, boiling water, heavy whipping cream, and flexible plastic straws.[3]
