"If you sign yourself away to the Empire, I can't come with you. Times are tough now, but we can keep saving without taking their credits. When we have enough money, we can catch a ship and start over somewhere new. We'll leave together."
―Caya, to Hoyel[1]

Caya was a male individual who lived on the planet Kavith III during the Imperial Era. One day, Caya and his best friend Hoyel found a Kavith wolf with its leg stuck in a trap. After the boys argued over what to do, Caya convinced Hoyel to kill the creature, but the wolf gnawed its leg off and escaped before they could. Some time later, Caya discovered that Hoyel was planning to leave the planet to join the Galactic Empire and begged Hoyel to stay. The two had developed romantic feelings for each other, but Hoyel ignored Caya's pleas and left the next morning. Later, in 4 ABY, when Hoyel was captured by members of the Ewok species on the moon Endor, he recalled his history with Caya and hallucinated Caya and the wolf encouraging him to set himself free.

History[]

The trapped wolf[]

"Don't go. Please, Hoyel. Isn't this enough for you?"
―Caya, to Hoyel[1]

During the Imperial Era, Caya lived on the planet Kavith III. One night[1] many years before 4 ABY,[2] Caya and his best friend, fellow Kavith III native Hoyel, traversed the planet's surface to hunt following a blizzard, with both boys marveling at the colorful auroras in the sky caused by the weather. After spending a while searching for game hidden beneath the snow, each boy found two frozen hares.[1]

Hoyel left Caya behind to join the Galactic Empire (insignia depicted).

Eventually, Caya spotted a Kavith wolf with a trap clamped on its leg. Seeing that the wolf was starving and attempting to gnaw its leg off, Hoyel refused to abandon it. The two held hands to comfort each other, and Caya convinced Hoyel to kill the creature instead of freeing it because of the potential that the wolf would attack once freed. As the two fearfully approached the wolf with knives drawn, Hoyel noticed the wolf's eyes were the same color as Caya's. Before they could kill it, the wolf bit its trapped leg off and ran away.[1]

Later, when Hoyel was nineteen, Caya discovered him looking at a Galactic Empire recruitment holodisc. Realizing Hoyel planned to enlist, Caya felt betrayed, as Hoyel had promised not to and the two had developed romantic feelings for each other. Hoyel tried to justify his decision to join the Empire and convince Caya to come with him, but Caya refused, insisting they could eventually leave the planet by saving up credits instead. Caya also shot down Hoyel's suggestion that they ultimately defect from the Empire to the Rebellion, warning that doing so would leave them in perpetual danger. Although Hoyel promised to be careful and come home one day, Caya held out hope that Hoyel would decide their life together was enough. All night long, Hoyel held Caya against him in bed, but Hoyel left to join the Empire the next morning.[1]

A freed man[]

"I'm sorry. I promised I'd come home, but I couldn't."
―Hoyel, to a hallucination of Caya[1]

Hoyel, Caya's best friend who became an Imperial scout trooper

Sometime after becoming an Imperial scout trooper, Hoyel sent money to Caya for a year and a half.[1] In 4 ABY,[2] Hoyel was stationed on the forest[1] moon[3] Endor and was captured by members of the native Ewok species. While in captivity, Hoyel imagined Caya's voice taunting him and reflected on the captured wolf he and Caya had encountered. One night, as Hoyel slept, he dreamt of the day Caya discovered that he was joining the Empire. Although Hoyel feared that he and Caya would be on the run from the Empire if he escaped captivity and returned to Caya, he also feared that if he never returned home, his friend would not remember him fondly.[1]

Eventually, Hoyel was approached by a horde of Ewoks and hallucinated Caya riding the three-legged wolf among the crowd. Fearing the Ewoks were coming to kill him, Hoyel sawed at his bindings with a makeshift knife as he apologized to the apparition of Caya. Just then, the Empire's Death Star battle station exploded above Endor, signaling to Hoyel that the Empire had lost its battle against the Rebellion. Reminded of meteors he and Caya used to watch together by the explosion, Hoyel turned to the hallucination of Caya, which nodded. Hoyel then used the makeshift knife to cut off his finger and slip out of his bindings, stripping his armor as he ran after the specter of Caya into Endor's woods.[1]

Personality and traits[]

"You think it's that easy to escape the Empire? When they catch you, they'll kill you—if not now, then someday. We'll never be able to stop running."
―Caya, to Hoyel[1]

Caya was a male with long blond hair and brown eyes that shone amber in light. Hoyel considered him beautiful. Caya had romantic feelings toward and cared deeply for Hoyel, leaving him deeply hurt when Hoyel left him behind for the Empire. Caya was terrified of the Empire and believed it was impossible to run from. He wished to help the Rebellion and leave Kavith III but refused to join the Empire to achieve either goal. Caya was empathetic toward a trapped wolf and wanted to kill it to relieve it of its pain, but was terrified to do so and approached the wolf near tears.[1]

Skills and abilities[]

"We have to kill it. For its own good. We have to, Hoyel."
―Caya, on the wolf[1]

Caya was a capable hunter and could utilize a hunting knife.[1]

Equipment[]

While hunting in the snow, Caya carried a hunting knife and wore wide wooden slippers with a hooded pelt jacket. He also held a lantern when he spoke with Hoyel in the dark.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Caya appeared in flashbacks in the short story "Wolf Trap," written by Alyssa Wong and published in the 2023 anthology From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi.[1]
