Binders, also called cuffs, were common prisoner restraints made of durasteel placed around a person's limbs.

Description[]

Binders were common and basic prisoner restraint cuffs made of durasteel.[1] Binders were designed with the intent of keeping a conscious prisoner controlled and subdued.[2] They were strong enough to keep a Wookiee's arms restrained,[3] and could be locked and secured by mechanical locks, key-code chip readers, identity scanners,[1] or code inputs.[3]

Many different companies manufactured binders, including Locris Syndicated Securities. While the products differed from each other, they shared the same basic design.[2]

History[]

Binders were an essential piece of equipment for bounty hunters.[2]

Imperial prisoners in binders

The Geonosians used binders on their prisoners in their gladiatorial arenas on Geonosis. These binders had pulse lock points that welded the clasps tight. They also featured an electronic release mechanism. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Padmé Amidala were fitted with such binders for their scheduled execution in the Petranaki arena, but were able to defeat their captors and executioners.[source?] The Confederacy of Independent Systems also made use of binders, replete with duranium cinch-locks.[source?]

Binders were used aboard the first Death Star to restrain dangerous prisoners. Han Solo fitted Chewbacca with a pair of binders when he and Luke Skywalker posed as stormtroopers in their attempt to rescue Leia Organa.[1] Skywalker was originally going to outfit Chewbacca with the binders, but he had Solo do it instead after the Wookiee snarled at him.[4] They left the binders unlocked as they entered the detention block, allowing the Wookiee to "break free" and aid his companions in the firefight that followed.[1]
