Behind the scenes[]

The memorable voice of Chewbacca was designed by Ben Burtt, sound designer for all nine films. Creating Chewbacca's voice was Burtt's first job for A New Hope. He mixed together various animal growls for different emotions, including those of bears.^[4] The most heavily used sound came from a cinnamon bear^[5] named Pooh.^[4] Burtt also used a black bear named Tarik,^[5] who died of congestive heart failure, liver disease, and cancer in October, 1994 at the age of 16.^[6]

In LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mi'no Teest indirectly mentioned Ewoks as "teddy bears."^[7]
