"Rain hellfire upon them."
―Grand Admiral Thrawn orders an aerial bombardment[5]

An aerial bombardment was a tactic utilized by sky-based naval forces against ground targets.

History[]

"Shall we commence an aerial bombardment, sir?"
«Oh, well that does sound like the thing to do, doesn't it? Let's get right on that…eventually…»
Gak-Sixtoo and Bokku[3]

During the First Battle of Geonosis, enormous Acclamator-class transgalactic military assault ships had penetrated the upper atmosphere of Geonosis, knocking out the Geonosian launch hives with aerial bombardment under the command of Jedi Grand Master Yoda.[1] In 19 BBY, sometime after the Galactic Empire's establishment from the Galactic Republic, the Imperial government began conducting operations on the planet Kamino, which led to the acquisition of the Kaminoan species' cloning technology by the Empire. After their operations on Kamino had ceased, Imperial Vice Admiral Edmon Rampart ordered a fleet of three Venator-class Star Destroyers to assume position and fire upon the capital of Tipoca City. As a result of the aerial bombardment, the city was destroyed and sank into the vast planetary oceans,[2] while the clone commandos of the deserted Clone Force 99 and Imperial Clone Commander Crosshair survived the bombardment and escaped the planet.[6]

Thrawn's bombardment on Peridea

In 3 ABY,[7] the Hutt crime lord Bokku carried out an aerial bombardment at Zee-Nine City Seven in Hutt Space, though the blasts were blocked by the Sith Lord Darth Vader.[3] Circa 9 ABY,[8] Grand Admiral-in-exile Mitth'raw'nuruodo "Thrawn" ordered his Star Destroyer, the Chimaera, to fire upon the attacking Force-sensitives Ahsoka Tano, Sabine Wren, Ezra Bridger as they approached the Great Mothers' Fortress. All three survived the attack.[5]
