For the 24th century starship, please see USS Buran (NCC-57580).
"We were ambushed, and I did… escape. But I didn't let my crew die. I blew them up. I knew what awaited them on Qo'noS – degradation, torture, slow, public death. It's the Klingon way. To spread terror. Not my crew. Not on my watch."
– Gabriel Lorca, 2256 ("Choose Your Pain")

The USS Buran (NCC-1422) was a Federation Cardenas-class starship operated by Starfleet in the mid-23rd century. In 2256, the Buran was commanded by Captain Gabriel Lorca.

About one month into the Federation-Klingon War, the Buran was ambushed and boarded by Klingons. The ship and its crew were said to have been destroyed.

Subsequently, a different Gabriel Lorca from a parallel universe took over the original captain's identity and reported that, knowing his crew would be tortured and executed on Qo'noS, he had elected to destroy his ship and crew. He claimed he was the only survivor, and that (during the battle) he sustained an injury that left lasting photosensitivity in his eyes. How much of this is true is uncertain, especially in light of the fact that Humans from that universe were innately more photosensitive. (DIS: "Choose Your Pain", "What's Past Is Prologue")

Background information[]

According to Ted Sullivan on episode 12 of After Trek, at some point Commander Ellen Landry served as first officer on the Buran under Captain Lorca, although she was obviously not killed during the vessel's destruction.

Apocrypha[]

Landry and Lorca's service on the Buran is depicted in the 2019 "Rise of Discovery" arc of Star Trek Online. In the mission "The Plausibility of the Impossible", the player character works with the Buran crew to defend Priors World against a renewed Klingon attack. In the subsequent mission, "Impossibility of Reason", the Buran is destroyed as the mirror universe Gabriel Lorca arrives to replace his prime universe counterpart, setting up the events of DIS: "Context Is for Kings".
